There’s a lot of watches I’d want for 50k. These aren’t on that list.

One is deeply discounted and the other isnt. that also says a lot.
I don’t get the logic here. Seems circular or syllogistic with regard to the Daytona. Is the 5711p a 28k watch selling for 6 figures?

I know I'd buy a Platona long before a 5711a @ that price......already voted with my wallet and it's a totally different beast. It's not like we're comparing Patek complications here since it's the 3 hand/date movement versus Rolex's chronograph......it's all about aesthetics and wrist presence here for me and at that price the Daytona wins. I don't know many watches that sleek that has the same presence actually.

Not saying I don't want a 5711a, just certainly not @ the premium of the secondary market now.

I'd say it's as hard to "justify" a simple SS Patek for 50 grand as it is to justify a "basic" Daytona watch made with platinum for the same 50 grand. People should buy what puts a smile on their face. I paid significantly less than that for my Daytona 1 1/2 years ago and could not possibly be happier. I can also see the merit of beautifully finished Pateks and the art of their movements. When I bought my watch, I never thought I'd sell it, but figured I got it slightly used and would probably absorb maybe $10k of additional depreciation over time. I was fine with that and the thought that I could cash out say 80% of what I paid for it if I ever wanted to was fine with me. The reality is that right now I guess I could sell it for a little more than I bought it for, but I have no interest in doing so. I also wear mine every day for 90% of the day and don't have a single worry about the watch not being able to handle it. Buy what you like and enjoy the heck out of it, I say.

IMHO both the 5711/1A and the Platona are over-hyped. They are both nice watches, but $50k for either one of them seem over-priced. But value is in the eye of the beholder. For many people, they see the $50k value in either one of these. I would rather purchase a Patek 3940 G or R at that price level.

I’d love a thread of which watches are intrinsically worth what they sell for.

Nonsense that would require us all to sober up and go home.

Hard to argue against this. I love my 5711, but wouldn't keep it over my 3940g if forced to sell one

We would all be talking about Seikos then.

Well said. It’s worth it to you and that’s all that matters. The heft and feel of the platona makes it a special watch. I would take it over the 5711 for the money if I was forced to chose. BTW, I have a 5711

Now comes the 5711r arguments :)

Gorgeous dial, good heft but elegantly thin. 51k MSRP.

THAT is the comparison :)

Any info if the R version is keeping up as well now that 5711 reaches into 50+ K?

I think it’s selling above retail on the secondary market. The 5980/1r also.

I would do a 5726 white dial in SS at retail over the 5711 in the grey market. Some ADs are telling me no shot, but others are saying it’s doable with a small wait time.

I would also do the Lange Datograph Flyback (not the up/down) 2nd hand. Those are going in the $40k’s.

Prices are around £45-50K so still 10-15K above the 5711a, but one dealer has it at £67K! Either he's crazy or has a time machine, probably the latter these days...

always amazes me when some dealers are asking for much more than others, do they really think someone is gonna call when others are proposing the same watch for much less?
Aboutthe post I would never buy a 5711 for grey prices, or a platona for retail, I much prefer the 5711, but if to get both at grey prices there is a big chance I might get the Platona, but there is a ton of watches I would prefer at that price point, but if to choose between the 2 at 50k I think I would take the Platona
