Said goodbye to a good friend last week.
A week ago today we had to say goodbye to our good buddy Butcher. Butch was a 10 year old St. Bernard that came to us as a rescue about 9 years ago. He was a pup we got to calm the pain of losing our previous St. Bernard to cancer. We found out a few weeks ago that Butch had osteosarcoma (bone cancer) when he started to develop a bump on his front right leg. As this is what took our previous saint we knew it was not something that could be cured and would eventually take Butch from us as well. We thought we would have longer than 3 weeks. We were told by our vet and our research that once this cancer presents in the extremities it is generally in other places already, which would explain some other (what we thought to be arthritis) issues he had.
As we could see his time was drawing near we enjoyed a few McDonalds cheeseburgers and an ice cream cone open two. We took him in Tuesday am and this is the first dog we ever stayed in the room with when it was put to sleep. It was gut wrenching and extremely peaceful all at the same time. He just drifted off to sleep and we could feel all the pain being lifted off of his old bones. You always hope that you do the right thing at the right time when it comes to decisions like this and in feel in my heart that we most certainly did in this instance. But it still sucks. Cancer is a smelly pirate hooker and I cannot wait for the day when we never have to lose another loved one, furry or not, to cancer. As this is the 5th dog we have lost to cancer in our 20 years of marriage I am beginning to look for answers as to why. Maybe all dogs will eventually get cancer, but I refuse to believe that. Maybe it is the food?? Maybe it is the bigger breeds that we always seem to have?? (st Bernard, gsd, lab etc) If anyone has done any research and can find a better food than Blue Buffalo Wilderness I would love to hear about it. We are looking into a custom prepared diet for our Standard Poodle. Sorry for the rant. Thanks for listening. As they say threads are useless without pictures so here we go. Will add a couple more when I get to my Mac. Or I have posted some on instagram if interested, same screen name. Godspeed my friend!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Sorry, Brandon. Losing a dog is a terrible experience. At least he had a reasonably long and very happy life with you. Don't lose heart...

Brandon--First, let me say I am very sorry for your loss. By the words you chose, it is very apparent that you loved Butch very much. Your post hits home for me, as this May 11 it will be 3 years since we lost our English Bulldog Roy to osteosarcoma as well. With Roy, it also developed in one of his legs. We had 5 weeks from the date of diagnosis until we had to put him down. I am still not ready to get another dog and this time of the year is hard. Sorry to hijack your thread; I send my condolences.

Very sorry to hear Brandon. It's very stressful on a family to lose furry friends. Our boxer had a tumor removed from her ear last fall. It was extremely stressful. Luckily she's still with us.
It does seem many large breeds are prone to cancer. I know boxers are among other things. |

My heart goes out to you Brandon. Euthanizing a pet is a kindness, but heartbreaking and gut wrenching at the same time. Take comfort in the fact that he had a wonderful life with you and your family.

I am so sorry Brandon, I lost a family member (Golden Retreiver) several months ago. I say family member because that's exactly what she was. All I can say is Butcher (and my Dog Jasmine) are in a beautiful and wonderful place right now, totally pain free and happy. I am sure they miss us, as much as we do them, but we will see them again someday. They are waiting for it at a place called Rainbow Bridge, if I can find the poem I will post it but I truly believe all it says. Heck Brandon, maybe you and I will meet there the same day and see our dogs again together.

My heart is heavy for you, as I know the frantic, then empty sadness, too.
Your life is better because you had the love and companionship of your beloved, beautiful, Bernard buddy. Blessings, DM

I am so sorry for your loss Brandon, find solace in the fact that you gave him a wonderful life and that you will see him again one day. I know just how difficult it is to hold a loved one in your arms in those final moments. He was a beautiful friend.
