Icon5 Personal Watches "Stolen" by Family Member Need Advice

First of all let me thank you in advance for any advice and/or recommendation here.

I had purchase rolex watches for over 5 years at the same AD in the United States, getting anything I could possible ask and even get some watches to my father in law and business partner, basically at retail I ask I bought it and then they'll pay me. All of those under my name from the AD, even warranty name (when they had it) and paid with my credit card and receipt under my name.

To make story short, my father in law decided to borrow some watches I keep on my warehouse, costing a significant amount (no box or papers those are keep on another location), upon trying to reach him he's claiming to not return the pieces while owning me and my wife significant amount of money for his failing business.

The watches I got for him and were paid includes a GMT Pepsi SS, Sub No date and Sub Starbucks, he did pay me those on random occasions, however since he decided to basically steal two of my pieces and owns me a significant amount of money I'm considering reporting him in order to get all 5 pieces and call it a day, at least we shouldn't be able to use them at pawns or anything.

What would you guys advice, he already cross any line and both my wife and I are aware of the kind of person he is. Do a police report? Contact the AD and Rolex to flag those serial numbers? What are the options of recovering the pieces in the future.

Thank you again for any insight

Show the police the invoices and CC transactions and tell them that your FIL take the watches without your knowledge and permission so basically he stolen from you …. And you want the watches back

Sounds sketchy.

First off don't lend out your watches and second keep watches in a safe deposit box not in a warehouse and third have your watches insured. If this isn't a belated April fools story.

That is messed up. So sorry to hear about that. I’d do whatever it takes to get them back. If that includes getting the police involved, then so be it.

Dude I wish it was a joke but is not.

I never borrow the watches it was sarcasm, warehouse means a commercial safe, he obviously had access to the safe since we have use it as a family safe for years. Insurance I don't have.
Main problem is things are falling apart for him, losing thousands and thousands of dollars in the last year, living a life he cannot afford. I knew when I lend him the mo ey it was probably gone but deciding to get into the warehouse and take two pieces that are not his is just wrong and something I won't let it slide.

That's why I'm asking for advice and what real options do I have

Just disowned him and call it a day. Forget about the watches. Show your family you are the bigger person. You are not going to send him to jail or sue him. It will be a bigger issue.

It sounds like a civil issue that the police will not get involved in. They’ll make a report and possibly visit him if they deem it necessary. They’re not going to take the watches from him and give it back to you. Your only course of legal action is small claims court. Do not claim the other three watches that he already paid you for. Most judges will not be sympathetic to a plaintiff whose hands are also dirty.

As I understood correctly, this is a typically moral - family matter, and family matters (dirty laundry) should be washed in the privacy of home. As long as any dialogue is possible, the police or other hired private entities should not be involved in this dispute. This is my opinion on this matter...

If you already knew what type of person he is then why the heck did you keep valuables in the same safe that he has access to?

You shouldn't need us to tell you what to do. Either report him to the police or confront him and get your stuff back.

Legal advice is the best way forward. A solicitor will tell you if you have a case, what your chances of success are and what your next steps should be.

Any chance of getting "father-in-laws" side of the story?

Desperation, methinks.

OP.
If the father in law is in such bad shape financially, then unfortunately, the watches are probably long gone.
You either write it all off, or take legal action. (if he's bankrupt, good luck with that, unless he owns any assets)
Don't give him access to any more money or valuables.
Get a new safe, hide all your keys (car, house etc) there.

Awful situation...best of luck.

sometimes im flabbergasted with type of stories one can find here... my two cents - either pure infantility, or mere idiocy, or the OP is trying to troll us here...

You don’t know what’s true and what’s not these days I for one wouldn’t be washing my dirty laundry on a public forum. As mentioned earlier you must have had your doubts about your family member and yet you gave him access to more valuables? The simple answer is if this is a legitimate post contact the police

This situation will not be solved by and does not require watch expertise.

It would be the same question if it was cash or cattle...especially if they were branded.

Seriously, should a couple watches really be your top priority at this point? You have yourself in a really f'd up business/family/legal situation and getting the watches won't fit that.

A crime is a crime whether it is family or not.

Your only decision is to report the crime or not; only you can know if or how the resulting fall out will impact you.
