Asking an AD for a Discount?

As I read and learn a question to you Rolex Jedi:

Is it permissible to ask an AD (NYC Wempe, DC Tyson's Corner, Chicago stores) if they will give a discount for cash? There are reduced priced rolexes on eBay, so I can offer the prices I see on eBay as a bargaining chip? Likelihood of success?

I'm gathering that you aren't familiar with the current world wide Rolex shortage on sport models. Discounts and sometimes getting the watch entirely can be difficult. Which model were you after?

It's certainly "permissable" to ask.

For stainless watch you probably won’t get a discount
Gold/platinum you should get a healthy discount >10%
Same goes for the “undesirables” lol

I live in DC and Lenkensdorfer is not going to give you a discount for cash. Same goes for Liljenquist (sister store) or TJB downtown. You are not the only person in any of those markets mentioned who aren't going into debt to get a watch. They take my AMEX and I take the points, MSRP.

You can ask anything you like

Mentioning an auction site will likely get you no where.

You can ask, I always do. Are you looking at a PM watch? That would be your best chance, forget it on SS sports/professional lines.

You certainly don’t have any chance if you don’t ask. I’m still baffled as to why anyone would want to deal with an AD period. I wouldn’t buy anything from some smug ass AD unless it was the only way I could purchase the watch I was after.

Ask on a DJ or TT, not much point on a sports SS.

You can ask whatever you want and however you want. Actual results is YMMV pending on circumstances.

sure, Ask. But don't mention any website pricing. They won't care. In fact, most dealers hate customer comparing their price with grey dealers.

If you let us know which model you're after, we'd be better able to answer your question. But unless it's a TT/PM model, you're going to have a hard time finding the watch, let alone getting any kind of discount.

Tough time to be getting into the Rolex brand, unfortunately.

I always ask even when I'm positive they will say no. I ask politely and respectfully and I'm a buyer so I figure there's no harm in it.

walked into CD Peacock looking for a TT 36mm DJ. They would not offer any discount due to lack of SS models. LOL.
They had cases after cases of DJ... Sales rep's response was due to SS shortage and Rolex's new rule, they could not offer any discount.

of course you can ask for discount. but don't mention eBay as the reference for the prices.
The more expensive watch the more discount you can get. Especially if it's slow mover.
Also you can ask for free Rolex memorabilia or some gift with your watch.
Once I asked for free pare of other watch. But was offered pack of condoms.

1) You may ask for HARD CASH discount, but @ those stores I wouldn't expect one.

2) There is no leveraging EBAY or other auction sites @ AD's.

3) I anticipate your likelihood of success to be 0.0%

In the current Rolex market, the FULL PRICE is the FAIR PRICE.

My local Rolex AD gives me 3% off any watch if I pay with cash. Their thought is, I'll either pay with a credit card (AMEX) which will charge them a fee (about 3%) or I pay with cash and they pay $0 fee and pass the savings along to me. This is one reason I keep going back to them.

you won't get much of a discount at wempe nyc or any other AD in nyc and this includes PM models. at most they'll let you ship out of state

your best bet for good discounts would be a small AD

No harm in asking. First time I asked, AD said only for gold or two-tone. I decided to take my business elsewhere, to a smaller AD, who offered a discount equal to state tax; they got not just one sale, but two.

One thing I learned from my dad, and probably the best thing, is that EVERYTHING is negotiable.

Another thing he taught me was “the golden rule.” Meaning, the ones with the gold rule. So if they want your money, they better be willing to negotiate. If they don’t want to negotiate, they don’t need your gold.

Man, I miss my dad. :(

Ask away, however, with current times, good luck.
If SS, don’t even try.

What watch are you looking to buy? That will make a difference in the response you get. If it is a SS Sub or GMT, I say ask, but any AD will shut you down quickly. A DJ or a TT or PM model, maybe??? Never hurts to ask. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Anything can happen, if you do not mention Ebay and if you call/visit a small AD! Be ready to purchase (no games) and state: I buy it right now for 5, 10, 15 % discount etc. Believe it or not, I got my ND with a discount one month ago. And they gained my business for future purchases. Smart guys.

Nope on the discount even if paying cash. Best to hope for would be shipped out of state and depending on your credit card 1-4 or 5x rewards points per dollar spent?!

V25V, you are on it! I bought an older SS Daytona from Fred there in Tysons. They seem pretty firm on not offering a discount. They have good pieces. Do you think they will give a 10%. How to approach them?

It’s all supply and demand. If you are after a high demand watch, you won’t get a discount.
