Blaken is more collectable than factory Daytona??!
So I was over at a buddy's house yesterday and one of his friend just kept going off on how he's in the process of getting a Blaken Daytona. Now I'm not enough of an expert on the subject, I just know there are companies that customize swiss watches, whether it's by engraving or PVD, sometimes I guess collaboration with movies (ie. Bamford star war) I respect people who likes them, and I respect their view of art in design.
But this guy started going off on my Rolex, saying how much more his watch will appreciate in value and how it's easier to get a factory Daytona regardless of material but they only make certain amount for these customized watches. That kinda starting to bother me a bit....Maybe is because, like I said, I'm not an expert on the subject not to be bias. So what do you guys think? Are those watches worth spending so much more over retail, and will they actually increase in value? below are some pictures of what I've found online of those Blaken designs, and what I wore last night..my 116505 Daytona Rose Gold Happy Friday y'all!

Keep what you have I’d take your Daytona 11/10 times over that crap. |

Ask for an example of a Frankenstein Rolex being collectible... Perhaps, this company only butchers 25-50 Rolex a year, so it may take awhile to obtain.

Your watch is nicer. Maybe easier to get because it’s PM, but doesn’t matter either way. How much are the modified Daytona’s going for?

Reminds me of putting expensive after market wheels and tricking out a car. I’ll take original stock any day. There may be exceptions ...but I can’t really think of any...Overtime originality is what collectors want...and I’d bet money most watch collectors feel the same!

I see they goes for north of $30k on chrono24. Apparently they only make less than 50 pcs each time they modify a watch.

They tend to collect more dust at the shop I frequent.

Any modification to a Rolex is only going to hurt the value. Like putting spinner rims on a Ferrari. OEM always holds value, modified, not so much.

My Rolex has some unique scratches. Doesn't make it any more valuable and some black paint ain't gonna do that job either...
You could argue that these watches are worth very little since Rolex will not service them. Your friend should just have gotten an Invicta. |

He's trying to compare it with artwork. It's a much smaller market. You'll probably never get your money out of it, like a resto mod car, new tech today, old tech tomorrow. Original never gets old, just better, but I guess that's not the real reason, you've got to love it. I'm the original camp myself.

This forum has many long time collectors- years of experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm. I doubt we will see one comment from someone supporting the collectibility of these customized pieces. I also doubt you will see any in the classifieds to cross reference just how strong of a following they have-
Your Daytona is beautiful, enjoy it for a lifetime. |

People mix up collectible, desirable and rare. Blaken watches are rare, because numbers are low, but they are neither desirable or collectible. Daytona C is desirable. There are lots of them around. The demand is just so much higher than the amount of watches made that it it desirable. In order to be collectible you need both desirability (and perhaps future desirability, compared to current desirability) and rarity.

Thank you all for the kind words, I absolutely love my Daytona! Got it when Rolex first came out with the chocolate dial.
Did some more digging on these companies, Forbes did a piece on George Bamford back in 2015. Their mission statement was putting a modern art spin while still paying homage at the same time. I just don't buy it...all it did was changed the color of the dial and then PVD the watch. That's nothing new

Not hardly. It’s a modified Rolex. A frankenwatch. Are there many Blaken? No. That does not mean collectors want them. It just means that don’t make many. First thing that came to mind was spinners on a premium vehicle. Others said so, too. If some of our members enjoy the modified Rolex, great! To each his own. However, I keep things original. That’s how collectors want it.
Of course, this is just my opinion.

I think they spent an incredible amount of time to modify the watch and the end product look substantially differ from original and I would never buy one at any cost. I prefer originality over modifications. Being a Porsche purist, I found some mods would improve the driving dynamic of the car but resale always take a heavy bath. Another pass on that franken-watch.

I bought a Project X PVD DLC 116520 Daytona several years ago , I sold it and lost 40% off the cost.
Also the coating chips ,To have the clasp repaired or recoated was £500 and Rolex service centres won’t go near them , Your Mate doesn’t know what he is talking about is my 2 cents . BTW your 116505. I owned one for four year wore it and sold it at a profit |
