Looking to buy a chronograph

Hello

Any advice regarding a chronograph under 10k? Brands I need to check out?

Thanks!

Too many to list, start by choosing some things you have looked at and tried on.

Omega Speedy Pro is the only chrono I will ever own.

A few top of mind ideas:
  1. Speedmaster "Moon Watch" (difficult to find better value for money in terms of provenance and iconic status)
  2. JLC "Sector Dial" Master Chronograph (aesthetically very well executed and top-notch automatic chronograph movement)
  3. Any version of Zenith El Primero you like (another legendary and iconic chronograph movement)

You need to try these on (and possibly others, e.g. IWC ref. 3714) to find the one that really "sings" to you.

Looking to buy a chronograph

I picked up a Panerai 524 recently. Very happy with it so far. The movement is in-house and unique which were important to me. Next on my list is a Zenith which I feel is extremely underrated. We all comment on the currently supply of the Daytona but I easily saw a dozen on wrists last week.

Speedmaster Professional with hesalite crystal. You’ll be wearing a part of history on your wrist.
I own one along with the Daytona as my only 2 chronographs.
Cheers.

As beshannon said, the choice is vast, even if many use the same caliber, typically the ETA/Valjoux 7750.

Go visit Chrono24, and whilst it doesn’t have every single brand there, there’ll be more than enough for you to figure out what style, size, etc appeals to you most.
Don’t set the price filter at €10K, since you may be missing out of something you can negotiate down or will push your budget to get.

If you want in-house movements (and haute hologerie calibers), then you’ll want to concentrate on:
Zenith (El Primero also used in Ebel and Bvlgari Octo Velocissmo)
Bvlgari Octo Finissimo
Chopard L.U.C. (and Mille Miglia since 2015/16)
Parmigiani Fleurier Pershing & Metrographe
Jaquet-Droz SW
Jaeger Le-Coultre
Girard-Perregaux (Laureato, Chrono Hawk, Vintage 1945)
Blancpain (Air Command, Fifty Fathoms, Bathyscaphe, Villeret, Lemans, L-Evolution)
Glashutte Original (Senator, Sport Evolution, Seventies, Sixties, PanoGraph)
Seiko/Grand Seiko
Roger Dubuis
Piaget Polo 45 & Polo S
Vacheron Constantin
Daniel Roth
Gerald Genta

Thanks for the feedback! Looking at JLC and Glashutte at the moment. Saw a zenith el primero stratos spindrift at a good price too but I am not too sure about that one...

Cartier Roadster Chronograph. Comes with SS band, and 2 other straps when new that you can remove in less than 10 seconds.

I hate to break your price limit but these can be had around 13k and are fantastic. Probably 10k easy pre owned when they start to come to market.

I love it so far.

Ok, I'm not a fan of many watches. I have my roadster with 5 different straps which keeps things interesting and never get tired of it.

but that is very cool! Is this something new???

Some good suggestions so far if you like the classic look.
If you want something more unique, there is the GO Panograph.

I have not found a chronograph that's easier to read in day and night than the Sinn EZM 1.1 or the EZM 1

IWC have some handsome Spitfire chronographs out which certainly warrant a look as well. Here’s the ‘dink’s take on the Steel model and an overview of the whole line, which includes a bronze and green model as well:
A Week On The Wrist: The IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Spitfire https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/th...graph-spitfire
Introducing: The IWC Pilot's Watch Spitfire Collection (VIDEO) https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/iw...on-introducing

If you don’t mind smaller and older, I bought an IWC 3706 Fliegerchrono this year for a relative bargain.

Outside of IWC and the rest mentioned above, I would urge you to consider the Longines Avigation ‘Big Eye’. That is a very handsome chrono as well and good value.

The Sinn 356 and Damasko DA56 are also excellent choices.

I can second the El Primero. Just acquired a 42mm grey, truly spectacular!

I love chronographs. Right now, for around your price, I’ve been thinking about an Omega Planet Ocean Chronograph. Good accurate movement, has 12 hour, minute, small seconds on subdials and a date, a dive bezel and 600m water resistance.

Very large watch though, but if you are considering an IWC Pilot Chrono, it’s pretty big too.

Breguet XXI -almost unique with a central hand minute counter, IWC do a bunch of different chronos from 7750 based ones, some with split second/ minute function, others with their own in house movements...if you want a diver/chrono the older versions of the GST cased Aquatimers are great.

Big 45 mm chrono -Blancpain fifty fathoms
med 43 mm chrono - Blancpain Bathyscaphe
smaller 38-40mm chrono Blancpain Leman
All beautifully made and bargains pre-owned

I love the Speedy Pro, but the larger 44mm Speedmaster racing Master chronometer versions are excellent, especially if you want an auto with a date.

I think it will be a zenith... what do you guys think of a zenith el primero stratos spindrift? Really like the sporty look of that watch. I also look for a good movement with some history... :-)

I’m a big fan of Stowa. Price wise it’s way down the list but they make quality products for good prices.

If I were looking for a chronograph in the $10,000 range, I'd personally try to stretch my budget a little and try to find a nice pre-owned gold Breguet Classique Chronograph but given that you're considering a Zenith Defy El Primero, the Breguet is probably not for you. Therefore a Speedmaster sapphire sandwich would be my choice and it would come it at well under half your budget and you'd be getting the most iconic chronograph ever made. I'd also consider a Breitling with the 01 movement or a Zenith El Primero.

Looking to buy a chronograph

Why $10k if you can spend 5 for Speedy

Or, go big straight towards Breguet XXI 3817.

You might also look at Tudor; I agree also on the Monaco and the Speedmaster. All are considerably less than $10K.
