Problems on ETA Valjoux 7753/7750

Hi all! Can anyone please enumerate the common issues for the Valjoux 7753/7750 movements and how to avoid it? I’ve been told that you can only change the date during the day and not in the evening. Is this true? What’s the interval time to properly change the date without damaging the watch? Cheers!

The Valjoux 7750 movements (as well as many other movements) recommend a date change NOT be effected between 8pm and 2 am because the date-change gears are engaged at that time.

You can change the date at any time of day that you want; just turn the hands beyond/before those times, set the date, and re-set the hands.

Yeah do not quick change the date between 10pm and 2am, you risk breaking something in the date mechanism. Aside from that they are very solid movements, not pretty or sophisticated but they go on forever, great stuff.

Edit: Larry was a bit quicker than me to respond, I didn't see that.

Thanks, Larry! Great to know! For 7753 movements, there is a pusher specifically to change the date. Every time I set it and pushed the button 4 times, it gets stuck. I believe there's an issue with the date wheel. ;(

Ok great to know! Thank you so much! Some sites say it's until 3am. I'll take your advice. Also, I noticed that they are very noisy. Is that normal?

Yes they're pretty noisy, you can hear the rotor whizzing around, the spring clicking inside the grooves of the barrel when it's fully wound. It is a tractor. As a watchmaker I love working on them from time to time, it is a true no-nonsense workhorse movement.

Are they difficult to service?

Not at all. Most watchmakers know this thing inside out.

Does it get stuck during the times everyone mentioned? If not then you can have an issue on the date change mechanism.

The 7750 is an excellent movement. They can be regulated to run great. I agree with Bas, they are one of my favorite movements hands down. Even though I am not a chrono guy.

The 7750's also have a rotor wobble to them. You can feel it sometimes on the wrist.

One reason among others for getting rid of my IWC GST Chrono was that it felt as if the Valjoux shook my arm rather than my arm winding the watch...

It is definitely a different feeling. But man the 7750 is such a trooper when it comes to abuse. One of my favorite movements hands down. I just wise it was a thinner movement, less Kardashian like.

In my old iwc it was keeping fabulous time.

I would always wind the watch forwards so both hands were pointing downwards, then wind the date to the day before actual.

Then wind the hands forward again to set the correct date and AM/PM timing.

No, I adjusted the date at 10am so it was during the allowed timeframe. It gets stuck regardless, so yeah the date wheel has an issue. I sent it to an AD for repair and it’s still under warranty so that’s all good! ;)
