Opinions....5146J

Hi All. Looking to pick up another Patek. This one quite different from the 5524 recently acquired. Just wondering everybody’s thoughts on having this reference alongside a yellow gold, DD 40 silver motif dial. Keep in mind.... casual dress 99% of the time… Jeans, polos, Chino’s, leather penny loafers, etc.… All thoughts and opinions are appreciated… Thank you

I think the the 5146 is the best value complication out there and is very versatile- dresses up/down. I think a G or P is more versatile than a J, however. I think of yellow gold as being more appropriate with business or at least business casual wear, but it depends a little on how you dress imo. Can work casually if you have gold wedding ring, belt buckles, shoe "flair" etc. but I may be a little ocd about that stuff.

If you like the 5146 reference, my opinion would be the P or G. Fairly easy to dress up and down.

I think it's a great one, the complication is so well executed and it's very aesthetically pleasing, but imo the Pateks I imagine you with, based on my time here in TRF I can see you are a sports guys, are the Nautilus and/or Aquanaut. How about a "simple" 5167r or a 5712r?

But the 5146J is just amazing.

Thank you. I do like the sports range, but I feel I’ve got that covered in Rolex. Also, I really do like the Nautilus/Aquanaut models, they would come as an addition after purchasing a more traditional 5146 or the like. I lean toward Rolex also, when it comes to SS ....GMT, SUB, DAYTONA, ETC...
I was just thinking, would the DD40 be a little redundant with a 5146?

See you had been biten now by the PP bug! That’s a beautiful reference, would suggest either WG or PT as your DD is YG

You’re on the slope, the slippery one.

My two cents: Go straight to the PC or PCC to save flipping costs. It will be cheaper in the long run. You’re likely to get there at some point now that you’ve got the Patek bug.

5146 is the classic AC, I also like the 5396R with Breguet numerals and the 5205R. Have you tried on all?

Yeah, I get that Rolex executes better the Sports lineup. I don't think the DD40 will be redundant with a 5146 at all. Go for it, its a great one, maybe the best bang for buck AC out there.

Btw, they look amazing on bracelets.

Thanks Neil. I like both those references. I’d like to stay 39mm minimum. Also, I really like YG vs RG, although I’ve never seen Patek RG live, only pics. Is it more towards pink or yellow?

i really like this model, in the platinum + slate dial configuration.
that said, i would recommend u try it on if possible.

although technically 39mm, imo it wears smaller due to the domed bezel. the dial itself is therefore a bit more 'crammed'.

for example, many say rolexes tend to wear very TTS. and I'd say the 5146 wears considerably smaller than my Expl 1... both 39mm.

all that said, this may be neglible depending on ur wrist size as well as ur overall preference.

lastly, u mentioned ur mostly casual attire. in which case i would highly recommend looking into the platinum+slate version. i think it's the most versatile config of this model's lineup.

Rich, seriously consider your long term plans when it comes to PP.
I started with a 5146P as well and took a bath on resale.
Buy what you like but make careful choices. These are expensive watches and it's important to understand the market. In my experience,
alot are keepers and some become fodder as something else will always catch your eye.
If you are smarter then me you'll shoot for the top right away. You'll save a lot of time and money that way!
Best of luck!

While I love the idea of a PC I personally think the 5146 is better executed and more versatile than the classic PCs (3940 or 5140). I find the dials cluttered and harder to dress down. I also much prefer a digital date for legibility than a pointer date. The only time I feel myself pining for a PC is on Feb 28 or 29th :)

Now a PC chrono is another story. Those dress up/down well but are beyond my budget...

While I do not currently have the 5146, it use to be a staple in my collection for years! I would wear it comfortably in a casual attire! I have owned the RG version and the WG Slate. Great watch!

Thank you men! I think I’m going to wait and see the blue dial 5205G before I move. The 5146 seems, from what I’ve seen/read, like it’s a bit smaller than a daytona or ExpI. I think that’s a touch smaller than I’d like.

oooh yes!
but be forewarned, a bit thick for a dress watch. the height+doming of the bezel may not be for everyone.

the one advantage of that piece is that you really can try it on at most ADs unlike the sports watches as they are in stock. Even if your not buying from an AD they are available there.

I own both the DD40 yellow gold and the the 5146G with slate dial and feel they are complementary. I love my 5146 which i bought new from my AD a few years back. One thing i should mention is that the 5146 needs to be bought right. Meaning, i would consider a pristine preowned one. They do not retain value well and there are quite a number of them for sale. This is the biggest disappointment about this reference for me. On the contrary, the Nautilus lines have appreciated in value exponentially. Just the market. Nothing to do with quality.
