Will Panerai ever ditch the small seconds in subdial?

Can we all agree that Panerai needs to start using large second hands, and lose the subdial?

Will they ever do this?

If so, they’ve done a few (see the 29, for example).

Never say never with Panerai, but I would say it’s very unlikely the central seconds is coming back.

Are you serious???? Panerai will remove the sub second dial when Rolex gets rid of that girly crown logo they have on their dials.

I prefer no seconds hand on a Panerai, but sub dial seconds hand is part of the identity.

That’s one of the coolest thing about their watches is the small seconds hand at the 9 o’clock position. That’s also what started my liking towards the 111 a few years back before getting into the brand.

I’m looking at a Submersible. For a dive watch that is not a chronograph, the small seconds hand just doesn’t make sense. Moreover, every once in a while in our daily lives, we actually do need to see actual seconds one by one.

I am not a big diver, so I am asking the question - is the minute hand really valuable when the watch is used for diving purposes? I believe if you actually used the watch to assess bottom time, etc, you are going to rely on the bezel setting? Correct? And if that is how this works, then I would say Panerai is excellent. It’s highly visible and the bezel action is superb at least on my 979.

I believe the minute hand, when used in context of diving, is there to make certain the watch is still functioning.

I wish they'd ditch the large arcing crown-protection bar. It is the sole reason I have passed on two models I really liked otherwise.

You are absolutely right, it doesn’t make sense. That’s one of the quirky charms of Panerai. They made a military divers watch, ostensibly for precision operations, with no minute track and then for even greater precision they added a small seconds subdial that you can barely see. It’s this aesthetic logic that makes Panerai unlike any other watch. It’s goofy, that’s why it’s fun.

Yeah, back in my SCCA days racing Formula 2000 (2007 and 2008 seasons) wanted a true beater, and believe me my first gen BR03-92 with ETA movement has been through crazy vibrations, hard knocks, rain races, working on the car, world travel, rock climbing, and of course daily life for quite a few years. She's STILL going strong after zero maintenance. Am basically torture testing it at this point (LOL) and she still keeps excellent time (+/-2 seconds a day).

The rotor is now quite noisy tho. Maybe in another decade i'll get her serviced LOL!

Imho you need to look at what intellectual property Panerai had when Richemont bought the company.

Basically, a few case and face designs so that's really all they bought/own IP-wise. To abandon the very few tangible 'property' items owned by Richemont seems a bit shortsighted, yet we never know what cRaZy things Richemont might do considering their Panerai brand track record since Richemont purchased the company.

Maybe that's why we love the Panerai band, you never know what crazy things Richemont will do next. Some Paneristi are not fans of the TRON, whereas i love it. :)

I like the variety of dials Panerai offers. But what ticks me off are the lug holes. There are so many Radiomir 1940 models, which otherwise look great, but I cannot get over that feature. If Panerai introduced screws at least, as Blancpain does with the 5015. So, I am still waiting for a simple wirelug two hander, with very little text on the dial and an in-house movement. All of those characteristics exist as such, but not in the combination I am looking for so far.

Overall prefer the seconds hand in the 9 o'clock subdial. It's a signature feature like the crown guard.
