I agree with you. Just saying that that was probably not the driving factor in these closures.

Rolex will continue to cull single location, family owned Rolex AD across the US.

There are just too many dealers in “bad” locations and distributing precious inventory to those dealers is a waste because they simply don’t have the impact that dealers in larger cities have. Plus large multi location chains have consolidated purchasing and management. Just so much easier to work with.

Many of these smaller jewelers (who solely focused on Rolex) will move on without a new watch line. Honestly the other brands they would be able to be authorized to sell, in many cases, wouldn’t be worth the buildout and buy-in required to get started. They just don’t sell anything like Rolex..

That’s why so many brands (IWC, Breitling, Panerai etc) are opening their own company boutiques or e-commerce. They can’t get any independent dealers to invest in their brands!

Plant a store properly in New Jersey and you are accessible to a lot of people.
Makes total sense about the other brands.

I'm relieved Hamilton is still an AD. They are in a great spot between two major cities in a state full of tech and pharma and they have Patek too so Rolex is in good company.

I see it happening to an AD in my city. I was told it’s because a Rolex Boutique is coming in, that doesn’t want to compete with them for business.

An honest shop, they were able to offer a kermit (2 pieces of two-tone purchase history over the last 6 years and some small amounts of jewelry) in April of this year. Waiting list only 6 months.

Southern tier dealer (now yanked) was not so kind in person.

Hm. The smallish family shop where I got my Datejust didn't give me any guff about "relationship," and rather than B.S. 'em, I specifically said that my girlfriend unfortunately would never want a Rolex. I guess different shops have different SOPs.

Rolex is not a non-profit business. Nobody has ever said it is not-for-profit.

It is a profitable business which all businesses need to be at some point, and Rolex SA is very profitable.

Commercial decisions need to be made on this basis.

There’s nothing that grubby in Singapore (or anywhere in south east Asia probably). I am surprised to hear they exist in HK.

Non-profit doesn't mean what most people think. Their executives and board members make huge salaries and they have enormous overhead. Non-profit just means any leftover profit is donated to assigned charities.

As Teck21 wrote a few posts ago, they are very much a for profit business like any other. They just happen to be owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, so net profits can flow through to that balance sheet for good work elsewhere.

I wouldn't call it grubby, just sterile and bland.

I've seen some quite run-down Rolex ADs in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, but at least they had character and were fun to visit.

Regional standards are not equal. Rolex USA practically drags its AD’s over hot coals. Lesser standards for dealers in South/Central America and Europe. Doesn’t make sense.

Fewer and fewer ADs and yet cases are totally empty at the remaining ADs. Rolex apparently will become all boutique at some point as AP has done. I can remember when there were two or three Rolex ADs in any nicer mall around the USA with cases filled to the brim.

That's the one!
I went in when the new BLRO was announced in 2018 and they had a drawer full of Daytonas. Said the Pepsi was "Hot" but would take my money while I wait. I declined, hindsight on the Daytonas tho...
