Hi - Brand New Member - Advice wanted

New Year Greetings fellow forum members from a foreign newbie -

Wondering if you kind people can help me out.
I'm considering my first Rolex purchase and am after some guidance.

First off -
Is a Cellini actually a Rolex? :)
I only ask as I've done many searches on this forum and can find few references to them.

I'm looking at either of these two watches (both on ebay):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ROLEX-CELLINI-NE...item45f05517c8

http://cgi.ebay.com/MENS-18K-WHITE-G...item414bac8738

Also tried Googling but haven't had much luck finding too much about the 4136 Model in particular.

Any advice, information as to quality, price value, manufacture date, honesty of sellers would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,
Mark

I am not familiar with that watch...although I have heard of a Rolex Cellini.

But more importantly...PLEASE think Thrice about buying on eBay. Please!

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum.

Of course they are Rolex and very nice.

Go to your nearest AD and get the latest Cellini catalog and you'll se how nice they are.

Thanks guys.

My comment about Cellini being Rolexs was tongue in cheek as most of the forum members seem to have the much more chunky models. :)

Thanks for the ebay warning.
Both ebay sellers seems to have good feeback. Should be OK, shouldn't it?

Do a search here on eBay...so much can go wrong...so much.

Hey Mark you might read some of the threads in the classified section the heading is "watch out". Talks about counterfeits. Good luck.

Mark:

My only thought is that there is a pretty big disparity in price of the two models you posted. They are relatively similar. I would go to an AD and check new prices. from my experience be patient befor spending that much on Ebay watches. I've bought several there and have found my best deals by being patient and not worring about the ones that got away. Good luck!!

obviously, there is risk with online purchasing - especially ebay... but you probably know that...

you've also noticed that your model-in-question is not particularly popular on this site... we here are oyster crazy.

if you insist on purchasing on ebay... first, do your homework on the particular models. know everything about them. it can help your making an informed decision.

unlike many here, i do trust the ebay method... many of these watch sellers sell authentic watches. however, they are usually tricky in their warranty. moreover, i recall reading a testimonial from a guy who bought from one of the ebay rolex giants. he got a legitimate watch, but the first time he took it swimming, it leaked. of course, they said to him that he did not have the crown properly screwed down - never mind the likelihood that the seals were probably shot and they're too cheap to replace them. it was also a used model, but still, i don't trust these online retail stores really know what's under the hood of their watches. so keep that in mind.

From my limited research, the round classical model at asking price of $4200 is a current
model, whereas the rectangular style at $2995 appears to be quite a bit older, maybe late '90s early 2000's which possibly explains the price discrepancy.

Another member described his 'pipe cleaner' wrists, also an apt decription for mine.

Sadly an Oyster (however much I envy a President) is out of the question for me.

The first, rectangular, is interesting as it is a "A" serial number, which is from 1999. So if it is truly new it has been at an AD a long time.

The second is a "K" serial from 2001, so the age is about the same.

The first one does not say Rolex on the case back and the second one does. I don't know if either or both are correct as I am no expert. I don't know if Cellini's used black boxes and I would definately ask to get pictures of the box and papers for the second watch.

Both sellers do seem ok as they have solid feedback and both deal in higher priced items regularly. All I can say is ask questions until you are sure of the seller and item.
