Have opprtunity to buy a mint condition Sea Dweller A-Series for $3400 No box. Has certificate, extra links/clasp. Having it shipped to rolex to authenticate and polish.
A reasonable deal or not?

Really want a Sea Dweller but don't "wanna spend a lot for this muffler"....

I would say so. There is a LN one on TZ right now for $4400, with a box...

I'd say that's a good deal. Mine is an A Series (from the late '90's) and running well. You should be able to source boxes...

Well, Interestingly I met the seller on Craigslist (please see my other post...no relation) We met, I looked at the watch to check general condition, then we headed to Jared's Jewelry (Chain)....At no cost to me and with the seller's OK they ship the watch to Rolex/Texas where it is inspected. Upon notification that the watch is authentic I'll have two options; pay $185 for just the authentication service or $550 for authentication and servicing. It's my understanding that this servicing will make the watch virtually new. They (Rolex) also warranty it for 1 yr.

Upon making a decision for the above and paying....I would then conduct the transaction with the seller and the warranty/return tag would be placed in my name so that upon it's arrival back at the store I'd be the one notified and authorized to pick up.....

It's a 10yr old watch, so I'm thinking of getting the servicing done....Hopefully I'll give birth to my first Rolex in a few weeks....Wanted this for a while...

...a near $4,000, serviced of course. (I do not know if they charge more than $550 for a SD)

Well I haven't paid that yet...The watch certainly looked good....Should I decline the servicing? Yes that certainly raises the price of the watch....Would a dealer service the watch otherwise before placing it for sale?..... I am saving 7% with no tax...(~$245)

As you said, it is a 10 year old watch. Check on the service history. If no history, then it would be highly recommended that you have one.

Also, yes a dealer will service the watch anytime you would like it serviced.

Ok....so...$4K/seviced/1yr warrantee...still a decent deal?...I've seen dealers here...I could certainly get a newer one, unseen that may not need servicing right away....for somewhere around $1K-1.5/more...

I liked being able to do an independent verification in person. That piece of mind is "of value" to me...

90% (or more) of the privately owned watches on the used market are going to need a service by the manufacturer's recommendations. I know a lot of mechanical watch owners IRL, and they are not religious about servicing as the folks in this forum generally are. I believe the prevalent opinion is "if it isn't broke, don't fix it."

The servicing cost on top of your $3400 price is no different than the servicing cost on top of a $3800 or $4000 watch elsewhere. I still believe it's a great deal, and would pay the $500-600 to have it serviced since it's going to be at RSC Dallas anyway.

Buying from a "dealer" does not guarantee you getting a recently serviced movement. Given the huge number of watches that can go 10, 20 or more years without trouble, it's easy to offer a "1 year warranty" without doing anything to a used watch. Statistically speaking, the dealer is bound to come out ahead in the long run.
