They drilled a hole through the wall, kinda cool.

Nothing beats the brazilian team that dug a tunnel under a busy street and came up UNDER the vault to take a cool 50+ MILLION though.

I agree that the thieves involved in this burglary/theft are professional, clever. However, I don't agree that they are 'kinda cool.' You are looking at technique, and I focus on effects in this instance. Those watches will end up on the streets of L.A., NY, Bangkok, Hong Kong, wherever, causing a nightmare for legitimate sellers and buyers, not to mention the insurance company that has to make the losses good. In short, this is not the movies.

If the 3.2 M was full retail value then I would guess the real loss is 40% less. Still what a crappy event to go through. I feel bad for the owner(s).

It's just the same as any other big city. Btw, there was a similar incident last February too.

That was nothing new , Albert Spaggiari and his team did that in Nice ( France ) in 1976 . Up till now still considered as the most ingenious bank heist ever . They took an "official" equivalent of 10 million USD then , and it was estimated that more then the triple was taken because most of the people couldn't declare what was in the vaults for tax reasons . Just calculate what that amount would represent nowadays .

6 arrested in Hong Kong over $3M Tokyo jewelry heist

6 arrested in Hong Kong over $3M Tokyo jewelry heist

Six people have been arrested in Hong Kong in connection with a $3 million jewelry store heist in Japan, police said Saturday.

Three men and three women were taken into custody Thursday and Friday at two different Hong Kong apartments where investigators found hundreds of watches, pieces of jewelry and cash worth about $3.2 million, police spokeswoman Baisy Wong said.

The watches and jewelry are believed to be the same items stolen last week from a jewelry shop in Tokyo's upscale Ginza district, where burglars bored a 16 to 20 inch (40 to 50 centimeter) hole through one of the store's concrete walls.

Surely organized crime group in Japan. The Asians have some NASTY mobs, just like all other countries, but this sounds like a group of TRUE professionals.

How do you ever know if what you are buying is stolen? I've had the opportunity to purchase in bulk NIB watches in the past. I would think that used 1 off deals would even be MUCH harder to know. But when Guido has 15 NIB's of a wide variety - that's a pretty good clue.

HONG KONG (Kyodo) A Hong Kong court indicted five people Monday in connection with the multimillion-dollar theft of jewelry from a store in Tokyo's Ginza district over the holidays.

Based on tips, police arrested three men and three women aged between 36 and 53 last week and found brand-name watches, necklaces, rings and bank notes worth around 25 million Hong Kong dollars (about ¥300 million) in their homes and in three safe-deposit boxes.

"We believe the three Chinese men indicted in the case are the masterminds of the group and we have no information there are other suspects at large," organized crime Senior Inspector Ralph Yeung said after five of the suspects appeared in the Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts in Kowloon.

The five defendants, who have yet to file pleas, are males Chan Kong Yiu, 52, Choi So Man, 50 and Chow Kwong Tung, 53, and females Chan Hong Nei, 37 and Lai Manjiao, 36.

The sixth suspect, a woman identified only by the surname Wong, was released on bail without being charged, Yeung said.

The five are charged with conspiracy to handle stolen goods, according to court documents covering 135 watches allegedly stolen from the Tenshodo store in Ginza sometime between Dec. 31 and Jan. 2.

Hong Kong police have retrieved 181 watches, including products by Vacheron Constantin, Rolex, Blancpain and Girard-Perregaux, about HK$360,000 in cash, antique bank notes and jewels apparently related to the case.

"We will meet with Japanese police personnel probably this week. The investigation continues and new charges may be filed against the suspects if further evidence is found," Yeung said.

Denying two of the defendants' request for bail, Magistrate Abu Bakar bin Wahab adjourned the case until Friday to give time for the prosecution to identify witnesses.

Jackson Poon, the lawyer for two of the suspects, said the case might take six months to finish and possibly longer if police need to gather evidence in Japan.

The police investigation is said to allege the three male defendants broke into the jeweler, mailed the stolen items to Hong Kong on Jan. 4 and left Japan for Hong Kong the same day.

A hole was made in the first-floor wall of the nine-story building housing the Tenshodo store and security cameras captured images of two intruders inside the jewelry shop, which is in the basement of the building.

According to Japanese police, 194 watches worth about ¥245 million went missing from the shop.

Of these, the Japanese police have so far provided serial numbers for 146 items to the Hong Kong police.
