Air King 116900 on the rise.......?

*****
Because I was interested to add an Air King 116900 additionally to my Rolex collection I observed Chrono24 and other places for some time.
Generally up till short the AK / new was available for a little below MSRP, whereas this is below the MSRP of the Explorer I and the Milgauss.
However since some time I noticed that prices are rising, even up till MSRP plus 15%.
This is new for me; in the meantime I purchased a NOS / full in the seals one at 3% below MSRP.
Could it be that this model is becoming more attention from potential interests?

As the highly sought after models are no longer available, collectors or buyers have shifted to other models such as Explorer, Milgauss, DJ and AK.

I’ve seen the AK posted new for $6900 on reputable watch sites. MSRP is a bargain these days at $6200. Picked one up at my AD about a month ago. It’s a really cool piece in the metal and is great in a collection. It has a storied aviation history. As I’ve said before on this forum I think it’s a sleeper that will gain interest even more so when it’s discontinued which I bet will be next year

My AD had one in stock a week ago. I don’t think a shortage would justify the price hike

..........

The Air King 16900 is very unique in its appearance because it is the ONLY ROLEX MODEL that shows 1/2 digit Arabic numerals ( 5 thru 55) on the dial, which in a very subtle way refers to a (classic analogue) aircraft/car/boat instrument panel.

All SS models I notice creeping up. Just not huge market for AK and it is easy-ish to get at AD. Same with OPs and Explorers.

Definitely easier to get than the most others. I’d say probably even a bit easier to get then a Explorer. I used to like the watch a lot, but now find find the dial too busy. Honestly I feel the only thing the watch has going for it is the green and yellow. JMO

Indeed that's true, however there is another unique aspect, the Air King offers.......it is the ONLY ROLEX MODEL that shows 1/2 digit Arabic numerals ( 5 thru 55) on the dial, which in a very subtle way refers to a (classic analogue) aircraft/car/boat instrument panel.

All SS follow suit. I bought my AK 2 yrs. ago NIB for 5k wore it a year as daily then traded it for a new Polar. I love the AK. If I could change one design on it l would make the 5 marker read 05.
Enjoy that Beauty!!

The old adage “last to go up, first to come down” applies to this variant.

So you are up 18%?

I'm glad you put it on, although that must be worth a % or two

Its been the watch I wanted even before the shortage, im waiting for a few AD's to get it and give me a call. One AD told me that they probably will have it for me before november so I'm excited. Unfortunately I have to drive out of Canada and into the US to buy it so I'm taking about an 1000 canadian dollar hit due to exchange rate but oh well

In the city of London they get put in the windows by WOS. These are not hard to get in those neck of the woods.

I like the look of it for sure, the green and yellow are a great contrast with the high polish case as well. It was the first model I looked at and would love to add one in the future.

I love the dial and also the fact it's a millgauss case. Millgauss workings and Millgauss anti magnetism properties.
It's basically a millgauss under a different name and a bargain £1500 cheaper. My daily wearer for work
Great watch I love the pure Matt black dial and minute dial.
I think people have realized how nice this watch is and it wears well

The biggest problem for Airking is the other watches available for similar money, like 14060 or Datejust but if you simply must have new, it’s the best value in the range.

So it’s not the cynical Rolex parts bin watch anymore?

Value? Interesting application of the concept. Rolex buying is not a bargain bin affair. “Get the his one, it’s like a less expensive Milgauss “

Unique like the California dial

Consider this...Rolex watches over time that have colored writing on their dials are not the norm and usually are highly collectible down the road.

Red subs and SDs

Uh oh. Here come the haters

Yeah that was the one feature I didn't love about it. Other than that I really like how its all put together.
