A shooting happened when officers from Gwinnett County police approached a suspicious vehicle near Shiloh Middle School, in Snellville Georgia.

Shots were fired from inside the vehicle, hitting one of the officers. It is unknown at this time if the officer returned fire.

The officer, identified as Antwan Toney, died after he was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, the department announced.

A massive manhunt was launched for the shooter(s). Several nearby neighborhoods were placed on virtual lockdown and police officers raced up and down streets, saturating the area with both patrol and specialized tactical teams.

Godspeed to this officer and prayers for his family.

Police Officer Antwan Toney was shot and killed today as he and another officer investigated reports of a suspicious vehicle near the intersection of Bethany Church Road and Shiloh Road at approximately 3:00 pm.

As the officers approached the vehicle at least one person inside opened fire, shooting through the vehicle's windows. Officer Toney was struck as he and the other officer returned fire. The vehicle crashed a short distance away and its four occupants fled on foot.

Officer Toney was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center where he succumbed to his wounds.

Officer Toney had served with the Gwinnett County Police Department for three years.

Godspeed Officer Toney, may you Rest In Peace.

Not at all Tim - you have the better way of memorializing these awful situations.

Our kids went to Shiloh (middle & high schools) and I lived a scant mile from that incident site. Then moved to a different city 6 miles further away in the same County 18 years ago.

What a terrible shame - they quickly caught one perpetrator who assisted the escape of the triggerman. Entire County is on edge as the killer is still at large and on foot.

All flags at half-staff around us on all buildings. Senseless violence.

Went for my regular 10k walk early this AM - with, ahem, a certain concealed companion just in case I saw a random Coyote along the way.

Ironically I found a loose license plate along the road - from a county government vehicle - and took it to Police HQ on foot. Had a call back because it had come from a stolen unit earlier in the week.

He was captured a mile and a half from my old home in Snellville. Gang activity and wholesale illegal opioid sales have been problems in that area.

Found him in a shed behind a home. He refused to surrender to two officers - he had an edged weapon, one tried tried tasing and then the other fired one shot. That was a dangerous situation for those two officers.
