I’m less interested in technical ability, and more how a singer sounds. Roland Barthes called it the ‘grain of the voice’, intending something more than just timbre, but the sound of “the body in the voice as it sings”, sound that has a material quality to it, resisting easy description. That’s a bit of a slippery philosophical concept that surely isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but when I hear John Lennon’s vocal chords ripping in Twist and Shout (at the end of the Beatles’ only recording session for their debut, Please Please Me, where he only had one shot because of the damage done, and nailed it), well, then I get it:
Best male rock voice = John Lennon. Best female rock voice = Lucinda Williams. Best male pop/jazz voice = Frank Sinatra. (Would love to list George Jones too, for peerless country crooning.) Best female pop/jazz voice = Ella Fitzgerald... IMO. |

So many variables.

Looking at the replies so far, you can almost guess the decade in which people grew up.
My vote: Best male rock voice: Robert Plant Best female rock voice: Ann Wilson

I don't think that pop starts have the best voices compared to highly trained voices but they have voices that connect with us..
Some interesting voices out of so many.... Meatloaf and Ellen Foley Joe Cocker and Bonnie Tyler. P!nk......How many of your choices can sing upside down while hanging up 30 feet in the air??? (Nope, no lip syncing or pre-recorded track) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_Ct2mXZ0WM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I4eSuazui8 Anne Wilson Stevie Nicks And of course Freddie.
