I totally understand now

First time posting something on this side of the forum. I’ve been mostly a Rolex guy for the past several years with an Omega here and there but tonight that changed. A good friend came into town and let me wear his newest addition and I have to say I get why Patek has the reputation it has. What an absolute stunning work of art. The finishing on this thing is on another level than anything I’ve worn so far. Although I’ll give Moser second place on this list. Pictures don’t do the 5980r any justice. The rose gold has a brilliance that can only be appreciated in person. I was pleasantly surprised that even tho it has quite a heft to it, it absolutely melts on the wrist and I forgot it was there within minutes. I say that but truly with a heavy hitter like this on my arm I was very conscious of table tops and hard surfaces. It was a pleasure to wear and I totally understand how different Patek is compared to Rolex or other brands. Hopefully one day I’ll be at a point to comfortably add something like this to my collection. This one made it to the grail list immediately.

This one is 5980/1R. 5980R is the strap version. I agree it is a good looking watch and has a great wrist presence.

That reference is extremely rare to see. It’s probably the most hyped and pushed by grey dealers. As a result it has become the most “get out of my face you peasant” watch in all of watchdom. It is sought after by celebrities like basketball players and music artists and they of course have the money to pay the 5 to 8 times over retail price caused by the hype of the greys. Then the worst part happens. Many of those references are permanently destroyed by encrusting them with cheap ass diamonds. This damage is of course irreversible. I think this nautilus reference is absolutely beautiful but its entire story is nothing more than a travesty in our hobby of horology.

Precious metal especially colored precious metal really changes the look and feel of any model. I personally absolutely adore my 5980-1A white. You get enough heft and the wrist presence is nice without being overbearing. It strikes the right balance for me...
