Move up to SD43?

Good Morning All,

I’ve been contemplating (obsessing) over the idea of trading in my 116610 for an SD43. I have a 7.75” wrist and some days I feel the Sub looks a little small. I also think the SD43 dial has a little more character that plays with the light and that red text is amazing whereas sometimes I feel the sub is just a little bland. I’m waiting for my AD to get one in stock to try it on but who knows when that’ll be due to Corona.

Just curious what you guys think. I know in the end I’ll have to see it in the flesh and make a decision based on how they feel and look next to each other.

Anyone have any regrets doing this trade based on the size, wearability, or thickness of the SD43?

Do you still have the polar or is the sub date you’re one and only?

if you want a bigger sub then go for it, sub is definitely more comfortable to wear. I don't think the thickness is an issue for the SD43 though

Sub looks fine on your wrist, but sounds like you've already decided! I also like the red text on the SD43.

I haven't tried a SD43, but I have tried the new ceramic cased Seamaster, which is 43.5mm and 14.5mm thick. I have a 6.5" somewhat flat wrist and it fit just fine, but does look sporty. My wife preferred the proportions over the Sub on my wrist. I wouldn't start worrying about "too big" until you get to Deep Sea proportions, which you could probably rock with 7.75" wrists anyway.

Same size wrist here, go for it! The SD43 will fit you better and has a real nice wrist presence. Also more special than a common Sub IMO. I traded up from a GMT and have been very happy with it.

100%. Subs are very common.... it will be nice to have something far more unique and special. You give up nothing with the SD43 and gain quite a bit in terms of new movement, better aesthetic, better proportions. Based on your OP, very high probability you will be happy with the sd43.

I think the sub fits you fine. Was going to pickup the SD43, thought it would fit my wrist better. While the case diameter is better for me, the watch felt too clunky overall. Thicker, less elegant. Noticeably heavier. I would definitely recommend trying them on side by side.

I thought for sure I would pick it up. I liked the red text, the bigger size, and less common aspect of it. In the end, I think the Sub fits me much better despite the smaller diameter.

I did this exact trade and ended up trading back eventually, but to a no date subC. The SD43 is an incredible watch but quite a bit larger and heavier. The submariner is just far more comfortable and versatile for me. I enjoyed the SD43 while I had it, though.

Current line up, however, I’ve been wearing the sub 95% of the time. I feel like if I went up to the SD43, that may change to 99% and would become my daily if the comfort is there. Fit my style better and I don’t like attention. Also love that no one notices the sub other than us WIS’.

The SD43 has really grown on me a lot lately. I think it is a great watch. That said I dont think the SubC looks too small on your wrist. It looks good!

You’ve got a great trio there....the point I was getting at in asking you was to see if there was a collection. Imo it works nicely when you can rotate it from time to time but it wasn’t for me as my one and only. If I were you I’d go for it...if you get tired of the size you can always throw the GMT on. By the way, I think the Sub date looks great on your wrist.

Since getting my SD43 last year it gets 95% wrist time. Second place goes to EXP2 polar, and my sub/gmt assortment mostly sit. I was unsure before getting it but took my SA advice and SD43 is amazing, highly recommend.

I suspect after picking up the SD43 your only question will be “why did I wait this long?!”.

My wrist is 7.5” and the sub looked too small to my eyes. Actually, all 40mm looked small to my eyes and I just couldn’t buy any from Rolex until I put the SD-43 on my wrist. It took less than 5 seconds to tell the boutique manager to order one, that was the the one the Rolex I was meant to have as my first.
The watch sits low, wear small “don’t Trust pictures” and the proportions are perfections.

I was in the same position as you. Same watch, same upgrade. I pulled the trigger, & no regrets.I have a 7 1/4" wrist. This'll be my last Rolex. I like to tell myself I saved the best for last.

I have both and my wrist is smaller than yours, 6.7, DO IT!!!!! The SD43 is the most handsome, well proportioned modern diver! Is my daily and grail!
Is a 50th anniversary and Rolex put a lot into it!

OP, I really think the 6 digits Sub is sitting and looking very good on your wrist, so try to add not replace, before taking a decision.

I, on the other hand, am in the opposite direction, owning the SD43 for about 9 months and contemplating getting a Hulk as a 40mm 6 digits Submariner. Also having a big wrist, about 7.5 to 8”. Sometime I find the SD43 sitting too tall and dangling heavy. Will figure it out after completing a few long rotations with the rest of my collection.

I also traded my GMT for a SD43. 40mm always felt too small for me. I love the larger proportions of the SD43. Also as others have said it not as common as a sub. The heavier weight feels better in my opinion.
