Poll- Patek AC
So my AD has a RG 5205 coming in and called me offering to do a partial exchange on the 5146. I never been a big fan of YG or RG on watches but this one always intrigued me. What would you do?

5146 is thinner with a deployment buckle and thus has wider profile and prong buckle. Also a lot more expensive do 5146 is more value for money and more classic. Thus is sportier!

The outrider is the 5396 anniversary with deployment buckle and profile between the two. Love the Breguet numbering but no PR and is thus a bit boring? Smallest of the lot at 38 mm I think

Do you see yourself gradually moving up the complication ladder? If so, I'd hold off, save (if needed), and take a look at the 5270R, which I just got. You get your RG and it's (both front AND back) gorgeous.
Between the two you mentioned, I like yours, personally. I know the 5205r black dial is a fan-favorite here on TRF, but I've never warmed to it, personally. Just FYI, my local AD recently got, and still has, a sealed BNIB, so I presume a recent batch must have just been shipped to ADs.

I say wait to see the new 5396. I'm interested in seeing the gray dial version.

I will probably get flamed but i think the 5146 is the classic timeless design (and that is why i bought one) and the 5205 is a bit too modern for my taste.

If the 5270 is your grail, then I definitely would wait. Making a trade-in now will end up costing more $$$ in the long run since you probably would end up flipping / trading again (i.e. the 5205r) because as you said, the AC would be redundant once you get the PCC. Hang onto your 5146 until you're ready to get the 5270, and then use it as currency. One trade-in will save you $$$.

Neither. My favorite AC is the Nautilus 5726/1A:
Not my photos, I'm afraid :(

I owned the 5205R and it's a good looking watch but can be really hard to read at times and there's no lume. It never sat right on my wrist. I also wasn't crazy about the open lugs. They were difficult to find but not anymore. I'd keep the 5146.

I'd go 5396 for now. Although I can my change my opinion tomorrow. All 3 are great!

If possible, I would compare them side by side in person and see which one you like better.

I prefer the 5146g to the 5205 (have never been a fan of yellow or rose gold with a black dial) so would definitely keep what you have and see the 5396 live to make a decision.
I think the 5146 is a classic as it was the first annual calendar with a power reserve. But if you do see yourself upgrading to PC, ACC or PCC, I'd hold on to the 5146.

Yes and the last Patek the OP needs to have the perfect collection is a Nautilus, but if it is out of the question then that particular 5205 is the most stunning reasonable priced RG AC dress watch, plus i prefer AC in windows than dials

All three have their own unique personalities and feels on the wrist. I owned the 5205G black dial and didn't love how it wore on the wrist or the legibility.

I looked at the 5396 and the 5205 when purchasing my 5146G and even after 2 years of ownership I'd still choose the 5146 - even over the new 5396 with Breguet numerals. I'm all about the hands and much prefer the feuille hands over the dauphine hands any day of the week.
So I'd keep the 5146G and save up for the grail watch. |

I sold my 5205R white dial despite liking its looks - very thick and wears small. In fact if you put the 5396, 5146 and 5205 next to each other the 5205 looks like it has the smallest dial and the thickest case. Would hang on to the 5146 if you are happy with it.

There have been some truly logical and helpful suggestions. I think I will hang onto the 5146 and then see if a PC is the next logical step on the adventure. It may be a Lange then but then who knows! I think the poll results are no surprise in the 5205 but to see the 5146 with a stronger following than the new Basel 2016 release I didn't expect!

I own the 5205r and think its sizing is perfectly proportioned. Most Pateks' wear to small for me and I am very sensitive to sizing - but not this one. It fits perfect.
I know this is a matter of taste: for me it is not even close. The 5205r with black dial seriously outperforms the two other contenders on all aesthetic parameters that I care for in a watch. |

Stick with your 5146, at best you're making a lateral move as the aesthetics of all the options are breathtaking to begin with!

I would hold tight. Your collection seems to be growing rapidly, which is great, and I worry you may end up flipping upwards. Thus lateral moves are just an expensive detour. Not to mention the 5146 really has that casual luxury feel which I love.

I think the observation of making a lateral move and then one day deciding to flip upwards to a PC or something in platinum is pretty sound....when you take a photo like I did of the 5146 you remember why you bought it in the first place!!
