I work in the insurance industry. My AD provided the appraisal free of charge, included with the purchase. You want the watch “scheduled” on your homeowners or renters policy. Typically this covers most perils including theft, accidental damage, and actually losing the watch believe it or not. This varies from carrier to carrier however. My Submariner costs about $95 per year added to my homeowners policy.

Add it to the home and content insurance. Appraisal/ Invoice is recommended as proof.

Personally I don’t like paying for insurance so I don’t insure my watches. Would it suck if something happened? Yes but life would go on, I am not making a payment on them and obviously didn’t need the money elsewhere because I put it into a watch

About to put my new DSSD on my VPP insurance with USAA. I'll report back with the cost but from what i've added before I'd guess another 90-100 year increase. This is with zero deductible.

May be safer than your home there but do you realize that the contents of your safety deposit box are not insured?

Just for reference i had a loss and they didn't even need receipts. It wasn't watches but we lost some electronics after a break in. Basically i had a picture of my kids playing with their iPads and that was proof enough we owned them. Replaced with the current value of the current model. Same for a camera. Canon EOS 70d which is discontinued so they will replace it with the new version which is an 80D.

I have a gold 1680-8 early year that I’d like to insure. My AD gave me an appraisal for new replacement which is ok but it’s worth a good deal more than that. Any suggestions?

When trying to insure my Sea Dweller I tried several specialist jewellery insurers and was quoted between £150 and £250 per year.

I then contacted my home insurance provider and they added it to my home insurance at full value (£8350), no excess, covered worldwide, for £26 a year.

From previous replies it looks like insurance is expensive in the US compared to U.K.

all you need to do is have a written appraisal with serial/photo by a competent watchmaker...i have my wife and i Rolex scheduled under our home policy...just make sure your policy covers mysterious disappearance...btw its about 600+ a year for 42k worth of coverage

No. Most private sellers just ship the watch. I would ask for a receipt and bill of sale also. A grey dealer will give you a receipt. With no receipt, take to any Rolex AD or fine watch dealer and pay for a third party appraisal. The name on the warranty card is irrelevant to getting insurance BUT it may very much affect replacement of the piece by the carrier as they will replace with a like value used watch not a new watch as they would have if you bought the watch new and your name was on the card. All of that should be good.

Would Jewelers Mutual accept a receipt from a dealer in used watches? I know they don't from private individual sellers.

One possible problem with putting it on your homeowners insurance is if you have a claim, it may raise your home insurance rates. I had that happen when I filed a claim on a stolen firearm. Now my firearms and watches are on separate policies.
