16233, whats up with the dark surface?
Just got this 1993 Datejust 16233 in mint condition. No polishing and crisp.
However, I discovered that each index has a dark top surface I've seen it on a few others on internet but it's quite hard to confirm since it could be dark reflections from camera etc. Therefore I put it in a lightbox and played around in different angles and also had a look through a loupe. Not a dark reflection, the surfaces actually have that color to them. What is it?! Should I be worried? Image: https://imgur.com/a/BnCN9HK |

Oxidation from the non gold metals in the alloy, very common.

Thanks, but why limited to the top surface only? The whole index body is the same metals?
For your reference my watch just stopped working so it's in for service. Could the mint condition/dark index and sudden stop actually be the result of lack of service? And therefore the oxidation on the dial haven't been polished away during the years.. I love it the way it is though :) |

just bring to RSC for service and ask them to clean the index for you.
It will come back like new!! |

I've always wondered about this myself.
I have a 1980's Tudor Prince Oysterdate whose indices feature the same dark, non-reflective facet on the top only. Unfortunately I have no answer for this.

My '72 Oysterdate had the same black on the top of the indices. Not on any other surfaces. I always assumed it was a reflection.
