Austin Metro. F-reg (1988 model year for non Brits) white. Proper bag of spanners that thing. 1L engine, I believe it came with a free hamster in a wheel to provide the “torque”. Four forward gears, though if you ever got it to fourth you couldn’t stay there for very long lest the car shake itself to smithereens through the vibrations - plus I don’t think the hamster could sustain 50mph for too long. Manual choke. Manual windows. I couldn’t turn the indicator lights on at the same time as the headlights - if I tried, the headlights would blink off as the indicators blinked on, though it was hard to tell this was happening because the headlights were somewhat dimmer than the light given off by a dead firefly. The “heater” only had two settings; “Arctic blast” and “rather chilly”. Power steering? That was for wimps, this POS needed to be driven by a man with arms like Popeye, despite the fact that it ran on bicycle tyres.

Calling it a death-trap would be doing it a kindness.

Not a photo of my actual car.

Edit because I’ve just noticed the bloke who owned the car pictured had fitted a steering lock. What an optimist! How I longed for the insurance money that would’ve come my way if only some complete moron of a thief had decided to steal my alleged car.

1976 Mazda GLC 0 - pre numbers in their models. Coat hanger for some radio reception and 4 speed. Pretty sure I paid more for the new windshield in my wife's X5 than I did for that car. Actually think I paid more for the weathertec floormats in that truck than I did for that car........

VW Beetle 1500cc pale blue (1969 vintage, bought in 1985).

It taught me how to catch oversteer. Repeatedly.

Ben

I had an 83 S10, 2 wheel drive as well, boy it slid around in the snow. I loved that truck. Got it in 85, drove around for a year and then I put ladder racks on and installed cable tv for about a year with it. Then the timing chain snapped and I sold it for parts (after seeing all the shavings in the pan).

Zakalwe, you cracked me up with that post.

The British motor industry lost it's way somewhere there in the 70s/80s.
By comparison I had a '67 Datsun 1000 which was made of Japanese Tuna cans but was reliable, fun to drive and would cruise all day at the speed limit.

One of these, in this color. Cornered like a dream but it was miserably unreliable and expensive to repair.

A mate had an X19 and as you say, it was a great handler and a fun car but reliability and build quality wasn't a strength. I had a FIAT 124 CC Sport Coupe at the time.

I had to get both pictures via Google.

A real life shot of either vehicle would have included the TOW TRUCK !!

1984 Buick Electra Park Avenue. Grandfather leased it, dad bought it off lease, a cream puff. I drove it, waxed it, pampered it, loved it, brother crashed it into a phone pole. He took it to college and proceeded to utterly destroy it. Looked just like this:

So then I drove my dad's 1986 Saab 9000S while he took the train to work. I dropped him off and picked him up every day. I really enjoyed it but it was in the shop every other week with something else wrong. A real gremlin. I kept it in such nice shape that the Saab mechanic bought it off my dad when last repair was too costly. Looked just like this:

The first car with my own money was when I graduated college. A 1996 Nissan Altima. Currently I drive a 2017 VW GTI Sport.

1988 Lincoln Town Car. Was a hand me down from my parents. We called it the LINCO of death because the L&N fell off the Lincoln and the car would occasionally stop going into drive causing us to drive home in reverse on more than 1 occasion. * Stock photo, not my actual car

1938 Buick Special. Straight 8 cylinder "Dyna-Flash" engine. Inherited from my grandparents who bought it new. It was a big hit on campus with that big backseat.
Big, heavy, comfortable.

1984 Rabbit Diesel. I bought it in 1987 with 150,000 miles. Very reliable with all 48 horsepower.

I would have to shut off the AC going uphill on the highways as it sucked too much power.
