This or That: ALS 1815 up/down RG vs. Gronefeld 1941 Remontoire

Hi all —

In the mood for a rose gold manual wind, and have settled on a Lange 1815 Up/Down (I’ve owned this before) and the Gronefeld 1941 Remontoire.

Different price points, but similar size, aesthetic, and under-the-radar appeal.

Your thoughts?

With my money the als but i like white metals. JLC has some cracking complications, double splits, world timers Ect in this price range and they do justice to gold

gronefeld is finished much nicer but is priced twice as much. as someone that owns the 1815 up down, its a great casual dress watch and its tough to beat it at the 15-20k secondary market price range. its also really tough to beat the gronefeld in the 40-50k price range, it is the highest level of finishing. next comparable finishing would be a high end journe (50-150k) or a voutilainen vingt 8 (80k)

That measley 35 hrs of power reserve on the Gronefeld will definitely bother me. I would choose the Lange between the two. Just my 2 cents, good luck!

If you want to make the prices a bit more comparable, I’d look at the gronefeld vs the 1815 chronograph. Similar aesthetic since the up/down has two subdials, and it’s still relatively slim. In that comparison, I’d take the Lange chronograph

You’re totally right. But I’m stuck on a 3-hander plus a “minor” complication — I know — the remontoire is not exactly minor :) plus the pulsation scale on the chrono irks me...

As mentioned and acknowledged, they’re at very different price points. However, on the basis of having already experienced the Lange & Sohne, maybe now’s the time to try the independent Grönefeld, even if it doesn’t end up being a long term acquisition (2-3 years minimum).

Just to add a bit of an alternative option to possibly mull over... https://www.chrono24.com/danielroth/...-id8229629.htm and if the RG case wasn’t hypercritical, then maybe a Lang & Heyne would find appeal – https://www.chrono24.com/langheyne/k...-id9539888.htm

I prefer the Lange, more elegant and svelte; just never got onboard with any Gronefeld models aesthetically, in spite of their technical prowess.

I have a Grönefeld Remontoire and love it... Mine is in steel..
It is just so well done front and back.. I like the Lange and have a datograph up/down as well -- Cannot go wrong with either of your picks in my opinion but I vote for the Grönefeld

The Grönefeld is next level. Both nice choices though.

Can we see shots of the casebacks? That would be pivotal for me here.

Aesthetically, I much prefer the 1815 and it's clearly the value proposition here but since you owned one and let it go, you may want to try the Gronefeld for something different. For its price, however, I'd much rather have an 1815 Chronograph.

Gronefeld for me but I’d prolly save some cash and get the version sans remontoir. I’m cheap.

Lazy sod!

No point bothering with the 1815 U/D, it’s a well finished striped 3/4 plate, engraved balance cock, and blued-screwed gold chatons, when it’s up against the Remontoire – it doesn’t stand a chance, unfortunately!

I would go with the Gronefeld for sure between the two of these.

Ha, cheers, the Gronefeld looks fantastic indeed, only the chrono can match it as I suspected.
