U.S. Customs\Tax for Guam purchase?

Hello all,

Making a deal with a private party on a JLC Reverso. Seller will be shipping form Guam to California. Does anyone know the Customs\Tax implications of this transaction. Watch will be shipped FedEx. I am a U.S. Citizen.

Thank you

Can’t imagine any duty.
It’s a US territory, whose citizens are Us citizens
I would think no different than from Puerto Rico or St. Thomas, where there is no duty when shipped to mainland.

Thanks. I was surprised as well, but the seller stated that there might be a tax\duty. Caught me by surprise.

Legally there should be sales tax collected by the seller, but generally that never happens with a private transaction, unless there is a paper trail.

Thanks guys. Just trying to make sure I don't end up with a surprise from FedEx upon delivery.

This is factually incorrect. Please do not continue to spread misinformation as this subject is frequently brought up and people are being mislead on this website.

Do I have to clear Customs when traveling to U.S. insular possessions (U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, or Guam)? If so, what are my duty exemptions?

I would think it was obvious by my specific langauge used that my statement was one of assumption with evidence of uncertainty. I guess you missed that.

You stated that there is no duty, seems you were quite certain.

So, if a watch is being mailed\delivered to me from Guam - I'd owe duty on anything over $1,600? The watch I'm buying is $5,700. Also, can it be mailed right to my address or do I have to pick it up at some customs office? Hmmm....starting to reconsider this purchase. Thanks for the info

I received two watches from London this year and both carriers DHL on one and FedEx on the other need the necessary forms including strap issues (endangered species). Once they have that DHL billed me the charges (a couple of hundred on 8 thousand) and FedEx needed a credit card number before releasing and delivering the watch.

Both delivered, both contacted me when the watches hit customs and both sent me the forms (email). No need to go to customs. Both situations were done in a day or two.

Hope this helps.
