IMHO, 312 has the cleaner dial and is a little bit more attractive in that sense.

I'm sure I will be in the minority here, but the clean dial of the 312 does it for me.

Great pics Tom.

I held them both in my hands at the AD's back in late May when I bought the 312 and they are both amazing watches. For me the 312 was the winner and at almost half the price of the 233 the price cinched it! If the 233 were a bit more reasonable in price then it would have been a much tougher decision.

I like the clean & simplicity dial, so I choose for 312.

233 hands down. Domed glass and dial layout is much more attractive and true to the Fiddy IMHO.

I have a 289,so would be inclined to go 312>233,as a personal choice.

As for 1950s casing the best are the 47mm 1950s in ss eg. 127 and the new 319 in rosegold. The 47mm 1950s are the nicest casings from Panerai. In 44mm I would vote the "normal" casing eg 111.Radiomirs in 47/48mm are also pretty nice !!

Overall, nothing beats the rosegold PAMs !!

233 <> 312?

I had the same dilemma...

I decided it had to be the new 1950 style case. I didn't think I would like the dome on the 233/270, and liked the simplicity of the 312 dial. I also wanted an automatic, not a manual wind. The possibility of GMT and a bracelet option had me heading to the 320/329.

However, once seen in person, it all changed. The dome looks very special in the flesh. The in photographs the distortion is sometime perceived to be unattractive, but when you move it around in front of you, it is like looking through an antique glass window while walking past: you can perceive the dial detail fine, and it somehow animates it.

Also something that isn't easy to see in photos, the 312/320 are thicker in the metal part of the body, much thicker. Also the case back is very prominent. This makes them look very tall on the wrist. Even the 270 is a little bigger, leaving the 233 the best balanced look for me.

Finally, I didn't think I would like the "fang", but now I enjoy the manual wind and the way it lets you crank it back to 8 days (really more like 10+)

So you have to see them in the flesh. Then maybe you will end up stretching your original budget like I did.

Interesting debate. I am not a Panerai aficionado; however, the ONLY PAM I have ever desperately wanted is the 312.

To me, there is no comparison.

Very interesting...the vote is unofficially...

PAM 312 13 votes

PAM 233 10 Votes

My vote..all things considered...the PAM 312 by a mile!

233 for the movement and the domed glas. But the price on the 312 can't be beaten.

Just got the call for the 312... I have the 233 - I have to say - the 233 for me is just an absolutely awesome watch. for me 233 (no need for 312)

The economic question is valid.... Certainly can't go wrong with 312. Panerai fans are very fortunate!
