If I want to work on my Rolex, then let me!

Ugh… why are jewelers such pains in the rear?

I know it is not common, actually very uncommon, for Rolex owners to work on their own watches. But we don’t need to be treated like children by jewelers who scold you for doing basic maintenance. If I want to work on my watch, I have every right to screw it up if I please too, not that I have yet. If I want to play with my $X,XXX dollar toy then I will. Why do they think it is rocket science to change a bezel insert? So my message to them is, “Just go back to selling me the parts like you use to, Mr. Jeweler!”

Rant over….. Feeling better now….

Thanks for listening.

Sometimes you just need to vent, I understand. My AD also made me feel like I was going to destroy my watch if I attempted to change the insert, telling me I would lose the spring and all this garbage, I can relate.

I've got an array of watch tools and enjoy doing minor jobs like insert swaps and such...if you have the know how, go for it...you may muck things up a bit but I'm sure it's nothing that cannot be repaired. Just practice on some lower end pieces...just get good tools, that cheap ones...and definitely get some silicone grease if you plan on cracking the case.

I enjoy doing minor maintenance on my Rolexes. It makes the hobby more fun. So just incase the jeweler is reading this tread, which I doubt, here is a link to the tread documenting the last time I took my GMT apart.

Just wait till I get done with my custom engraved GMT bezel insert project!

Today was better...
I went to another store today and came home with these!

The previous store will no longer be getting my business.
I can't wait to install the Pepsi myself!

OK I guess I'll be the contrarian, I know we have quite a few watch repair junkies on this site, I'm a technical person by nature and while I appreciate people like Mike and Jocke and Larry for their expertise. I would sooner rebuild a Lamborghini Murciélago transmission before I would repair a Rolex, JMHO

they used to act the same way when I wanted to know how to remove items from my rolex..but I did it anyway...and now I can swap the entire movements out-switch faces,do minimal repairs, etc...and soon I will start taking the movements apart...its the only way to learn.
good luck,
steve

Seems to me your complaint is with Rolex USA not the dealers.
It sounds like your complaint is that the dealers wont sell you parts,
well if that is what you are upset about its not the dealers who are
at fault, they are following the rules the agree to as an AD.

I accept Rolex has rules that the AD must follow. I actually think there rule is a good thing. It keeps the spare parts off of Franken watches and fakes out in the market.

I was turned off by the AD's very bad attitude, snotty comments, and tone. This is why I have decided to stop giving that particular jeweler my business.

If they ever pulled that on me, I'd tell them that I don't need a third parent and they best just shut their mouth.
