The Pinks, the Fuchsias, a GMT and a new home

For those that know me here on TRF, it goes without saying that I am a vintage Rolex enthusiast and collector of many fine vintage watches. While I enjoy many of the Rolex models and a few other non Rolex vintage watches, I am most fond of the GMT-MASTER. Hardly a week goes by without someone contacting me with questions or concerns about some particular vintage Rolex GMT or other model, but most often the questions are focused on a particular GMT model.

I started collecting watches over 40 years ago, and focused my attention on the GMT-MASTERs about 15 years ago. I haven’t looked back and still enjoy collecting the 1675s, 16750s and the later sapphire models. As time passed, one thing led to another and every now-and-then I would thin out the herd and put one up for sale when a different one came along. I found myself buying, selling and trading ever more and more. Sometimes, as many here can relate to, I let one go that I should have kept.

Last week I had the opportunity to purchase back one of my favorite GMTs, a gorgeous 1968 GMT 1675, that I sold a few years ago to another collector friend. This was a wonderful watch, very original with maybe one light polish in the past. As I talked with my friend, he reminded me that when I sold him the watch, I commented to him that the bezel insert had turned pink which was not one of my favorite colors. We both laughed as we reminisced about that conversation and compared notes as we talked about how our tastes have changed through the years. While I had never been a fan of the pink or fuchsia inserts, that have grown on me and are now some of my favorites.

Below is a photo of my newly acquired “pink” GMT. As you gaze upon it, maybe you have a story about the one that got away from you which you might want to share with us here. Or maybe, you have a favorite GMT with a fuchsia or pink bezel insert that you would like to share. Let’s see what you have!!!

Cheers to everyone from GMT Land and have a great day.

jP

You're all class JP....that is one beautiful GMT. I know I speak for a lot of guys in appreciation of you sharing your gmt knowledge with the vintage community. Here's my contribution to the thread...not a period correct insert but I just couldn't resist on my birth year 1675:

Awesome watch Lee, is there some special reason why these late 60s inserts will fade to pink and others won't?

Great post JP! My interest in GMT Master is spiked a few months ago and its people like you who keep my passion burning long! Currently I only have a 16700 N series in all black bezel. Hope I can get a new pepsi bezel from RSC and use it till it turn pink like your's 1 day!

I have no idea, think it must be the pigment used. I have just managed to source a NOS insert that is a dark Pink with no fade.

Great, that the watch came back to you, John!

I personally never was and will never be a fan of those "girly-coloured" inserts called pink-ladies. IMO much too feminin :-)

Watch gone, but not forgotten...
Blue/Rose RedBack with nice fade

Blue/magenta

Other watch, same insert...(blue/magenta)

Thanks for the comments everyone and those gorgeous watches. Here's another one that got away a few years ago. A fuchsia - I think it's Bueno's long lost twin.

Everything about this one just works so well together, as usual with all of your GMTs.

Black faded to green, or optical illusion?

Beautiful! Glad you got that beauty back home.
Here are a few pics of my GMT that I took a flight to bring home last year.
Huge thanks to your help for helping me verify and authenticate everything on the watch via pics prior to my purchase.
Fuchsia is an insert I picked up later.
