Micro scratches - Sand! 114060

Hi all,

Hear me out please, I am not worried about the usual scratches but I went on a 2 week beach based holiday and played with my kid in the small waves.

Long story short my bracelet is smothered in micro scratches from the sand! I though man the Sub can take the beach, that's what it's made for! I totally forgot about the sand swirling around it.

How to get them out? I'm sure it has lost shine since I have been back and the flashlight from my iPhone has revealed it is covered in mice sctratches.

Me personally I would leave it. I'm not a fan of polishing the case, but if you must the high polish areas can be taken care of with a Cape Cod cloth, and the brushed bracelet and case can be cleaned up with a brillo pad (red or green don't recall which since I've never done it). If this is beyond your comfort level next step would be to send it in to an independent watch maker.

I would leave it alone. Scratches are just an inevitable part of ownership.

I know that with the large expanse of shiny ceramic bezel the watch looks like jewelry. That is one of differences between it and its ancestors. It causes it to hurt that much more when it is put through its tool watch paces and comes out used looking. Time to make a decision which you want it to be, tool watch or jewel watch. If the answer is tool then let it gain more character with more adventures. If the answer is Jewel then get it polished and keep it out of harms ways.

Heck, that's nothing. Stop using your phone flashlight to look at it...you'll be amazed how much better it will look.

I'd just leave it alone. You'll get comfortable with micro scratches eventually. If you polish they will soon come back.

If you polish them out, it'll only happen again at some point. Instead, look at the scratches and let them remind you of the great day you had at the beach playing with your kid.

I recently took my sub with me on a trip to the beach and other adventures which involved a good amount of sand.

I'm sure the watch came back with a lot of new scratches. Another thing I'm sure of is that I'll never forget that trip.

Hi! Scratches should be the least of your worries. You should be more concerned about rust. lol. The best is to not worry at all and enjoy life.

Somehow, I can't help but think that every time someone posts a thread like this, Hans Wilsdorf's body spins in its grave like a fidget spinner on speed.

I'm sure it does pretty much the same thing when people post threads all about the diameter, insert material, and ink color on a Sea Dweller without once mentioning the HEV or the depth rating, even though he had been dead for years before the HEV was invented.

Really, the whole "Rolex as tool watch" concept is dead, except as some sort of archetypal abstraction that exist only in the minds of enthusiasts and even at that, only a few diehards.

Sand scratches are the best, especially when your watch is built for the water!

Are you saying the sand on the beach caused the scratches or the sand suspended in the water?

I’d also like to see pics of this.

scratches

Leave them be, my sub c has yet to visit the beach but my seamaster now 17 years old has been used for diving, beach holidays, kayaking, the lot and after 17 years its not too bad, I am sure my sub c will be in much the same condition at this age, but I do like to use my watches as near as possible to what they were designed for. dont worry about micro scratches its gonna happen beach or no beach

This.

And when you hand the watch to your kid on graduation day, you can point to the micro scratches and remind him/her of that awesome day at the beach 15 (or whatever) years ago.

Even though I'm too much of a fraidy cat to put my watches in the way of anything I perceive to be 'harm', these are very wise words (as usual). I'm trying to bring myself to pick up a pre-owned, tatty EXP II that I can use on survey to get me used to wearing a watch for the purpose for which it was intended.

I'd like to see pictures.

I took my brand new Sub 114060 to Grand Cayman for a weeklong vacation back in the spring. Went scuba diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding, etc. and no sand scratches whatsoever!
