A message to you lowballers........

Recently had a DJII on the market for sale. Eventually withdrew it from sale. The lowball offers at first were amusing but then became annoying. I mean offering me between $1,500 and $2,000 below my asking price, which was hugely discounted already. I guess when you are a serious watch enthusiast, these things are annoying.

So a message for you lowballers..........When it is your turn to sell a watch on the forum I can only hope you get lots of lowball, annoying offers.

I've gotten used to this over the years. It isn't just watches, it is with everything else. I buy stuff locally and I post it online and I often get some insane offers.

I don't take it personal. At the end of the day, everyone is hoping to score a good deal.

I wouldn't sweat it. You're always going to have people looking for a deal, so it's part of the territory.

example: "will you accept my Speedmaster X-33 for your Submariner?"

I guess "lowball" is defined by what the market will bear...................

Something is worth what someone else will pay.

If you withdrew the offer, potentially it was in fact too high.

Who knows, but market dictates price.

It sounds like you're frustrated...that said, in my experience it's best to keep these sorts of thoughts on the inside.

Selling something is no different than buying...it's a negotiaton down and up. Just like one would only make a serious offer if they were serious on buying something one is only going to receive the best offers from serious buyers.

I've sold watches in the past and have also gotten some ridiculously low ball offers as well. I just held out until someone with a serious offer who knew the value of what was up for sale came along.

Bottom line, you did not sell the watch for your price. Maybe the low ballers weren't so low after all. They may have been closer to the actual price the watch is worth then you were.

I agree with this 100%. The market dictates the final price, not the seller.

It's called negotiation. Just fire back a counter offer and see if both parties can agree on a price. Salesmanship begins when the customer says no.

Really?
List price $9100, my price $6300, that is 31% discount for a pristine piece, complete, with warranty left. Really?

Everyone wants to get a deal. Them not knowing your circumstances such as in a dire need for money. You may be more desperate and maybe except something like that. I just wouldnt respond and call it a day. I would be happy youre even getting hits on your watch. As shows people are at least looking at your ad.

Everyone sees the top number which was $6800 and change. Wholesale right now for the watch is on the low end of $5K even breaking the $4K barrier.

I personally would jump all over that at around $6K but that's just because it is what I am willing to pay for the watch, not because it is worth that much.

There are certainly many factors that go into the final price arrived at by a willing seller and a willing buyer. For example are you competing against a trusted seller ( not to immune your rep but the " trusted sellers " here have sold hundreds of watches)? Or can you get the watch new from an AD at a discount? If so is the difference between your price and the discounted price or the trusted sellers worth it? How badly does the buyer want your watch? All that being said I do not know you nor have I looked at your watch to comment on its worth. I just offer a few comments. Good luck on your future sales.

If you were truly getting $1,500-$2,000 below your asking price of $6,300 I would post the lowballer's SN and their offer to publicly shame them (assuming its not against forum rules), because that's just plain ridiculous. Everyone thinks they're smarter than everyone else and even though these guys may be trying to "feel" you out I don't blame you taking it as an insult to your intelligence.

Let's put it in simpler terms. If he's getting offers of $1,500 to $2,000 lower than $6300 he can just send his watch to bobswatches and get a HIGHER amount and not deal with these mooches and the headaches associated in selling with these guys. So these guys offering LESS than a reseller with a brick and mortar store is a slap in a face to him.

What a ridiculous thing to say. It isn't that I am smarter than everyone else but I can get a feel for opportunities. Please let me know if you can beat these stats:

NIB Submariner 116610LN with my name on the card $5,900 in 2015
NIB Submariner 116610LV with my name on the card $7,000 in 2016

I came in low, the buyer needed to sell, I got a good deal and the seller got the money. Done. This is basic economics and it is what the world is made of.

Bill it isn't the fact that some are smarter than others. But I respect your opinion and I respect the frustration from your perspective. What I am arguing here is that business should never be taken personal but again, that isn't up to me to decide.

If I was in the market for a Datejust II and I saw yours I would have made you an offer for $5900 wired within 20 minutes.

I do not know if you would consider that to be lowball but if you accepted I would have walked away with a HUGE smile on my face.

does the dial style impact offers? I'm not in the market for a DJII (and likely never will be given my wrist size), but wonder if you are taking into consideration the roman dial

I think $6300 with over 4 yrs warranty left is very good deal IMO.

Maybe 41mm size isn't that popular afterall!

opportunities are different from an opportunist. low ballers walk a fine line. everyone is different, but i feel all transactions should benefit all involved. nothing wrong with making a fair offer. and for the record i think your offer of $5900.00 is a fair place to start.
