Collection Feedback - Daytona

Do folks here find the SS Daytona (116500LN White) and the PM Daytona on OF (116519LN) redundant in a collection?

Part of me is contemplating changing up the collection a bit, and I’d have a Sub Date as a SS sport piece, but not a SS Daytona.

I know there’s not a “check-the-box” to any collection, but I’ve always penciled in SS Daytona as a staple.

It seems owners who have both the 116500 and 116519 gravitate towards the 116519 as their daily (at least based on recent threads) … or the go-to Daytona between the two.

Let go of my steel once I got the 519 as I never wore the steel anymore. The 519 is just as good as a daily and feels more special

There’s not really an overlap besides both being a Daytona. The wearing experience is completely different. Out of 10 occasions, I wear the OF Daytona 7-8 times. The rubber strap is also more scratch resistance compared to the PCL on the oyster bracelet. While the SS Daytona is rich in heritage and history, they feels a little lacklustre once one has tried PM Daytona.

I have both and I feel they look and wear completley different. No redundacy at all.

If I had to move one, it would be the 500.

I had a precious metal Daytona and a 116500. Enjoyed both but eventually sold the 116500 and kept the other. No regrets.

I have the 116500ln and whatever is the YG meteorite on OF. They are completely different to me and I am looking to add a full bracelet PM Daytona.
I am surprised at people saying they would let go of the 116500 so thanks for sharing that perspective

If the 116519 would look good in a bracelet.

Slightly different take, but I have both black & white 116500s and a 40 YM Everose. I wanted to add the chocolate RG Daytona but felt the YM was too close and has a date which I prefer so passed on the RG Daytona. Sadly isn’t an option anymore as the Daytona has been discontinued…

Not a huge fan of the SS Daytona.
If you hadn't the Sub, then I'd have thought both Daytonas are fine as a two-piece.
But with the sub, I don't see a great reason to have the SS Daytona. If you sold it, you could get a completely different third piece.

I could see them both existing. You need to really love that model. I used to have two Subs with no issue. I could have 10 Subs and I wouldn't give a hoot about overlap. It's my favorite watch.

Not sure if it compares, but I had a 116520 and then obtained a 116519. I instantly sold the 116520 as the 116519 never left my wrist.

Not at all redundant. IMO, I prefer the combination of a steel Daytona and an OF to say, 2 steel Daytona's (with the same bezel- a 116520 or a Zenith paired with a ceramic with a different dial color is oh so nice as well).

But, really, if one has more than 1 Daytona, life is pretty darn good.

Indeed - 1st world problems! If I were to move on from the 116500LN, I’d gift to my dad … who has long been a fan also. So, no net new watch.

Was fortunate to get the AD call on the 116519LN the weekend before W&W 2023 and will be picking up (out of town) in a couple weeks.

Can't ever have too many Daytona's. It's first reference I felt like I could have multiple iterations of.

Stainless steel would be first pick and should never leave the collection. After that any addition PM or not is a bonus.

Multiple. Not redundant. If you trade or sell you will regret it.

I have both and the 519LN gets 98% of the wrist time. It's incredible. If I could only keep one, it would be 519LN, not the 500. If you can swing keeping them both, obviously do so. Just my 2-cents.

I've got to be honest but I never get the "is it redundant" thing whenever anyone asks it.

IMO a watch is only redundant if it's literally EXACTLY the same model as another one you own. If it's not identical, then a watch may be similar but it's still a different watch, so assuming there was something that drew you two both in the first place, then there's no redundancy IMO.

Collection Feedback - Daytona

The 116519 is a stunning watch in person. Would happily wear it all day long. And currently wotd. It does ding / scratch easily so as long as you’re not precious about PM, it’s a keeper

Interesting. With ceramic bezel and OF, would assume it’s better suited for a daily and would scratch less … though WG is “softer” than Steel

Is a baby brother redundant? Probably if you ask the older toddler and definitely not if you ask the younger one.

Mine is coming up on 5 years of ownership and literally looks brand new. The whole WG is "softer" thing is way overblown. Yes, it's softer, but realistically, anything that's going to come into contact with your watch with enough force to scratch gold will most likely scratch steel as well.

The much bigger impact of wear is how the wearer wears it. (Yes I just said that. )

Love my 519. Such a versatile watch. And that dial is incredible. Wear it much more than my SS watch.

Assuming you don’t have anything else in your collection: If offered, I’d take the SS and use it as the daily (and prob never wear the sub again). I love my YG OF and you could wear it everyday, but I like keeping PM wearing for weekends or special occasions.

If I had a watch that I was saving for special occasions, I'd wear it every day to remind myself that every day is a special occasion.

If no new net watch I’d keep both, as I could find occasions to wear both. I think they’re different enough to warrant keeping both. If I had a chance to replace the 500 for another piece though, I’d go that route.

My 116500 is the black dial and my 519 is silver so in my case they are not redundant. Both are awesome and worn differently. The white dial 500 would also look different as the subdials are different.

See my avatar name. I had a beautiful 519. Sold it to pay for the 116500 when I got the call. The 500 is great, the 519 was superior in every way. My biggest Rolex regret. I will have another one day which is why I didn't change my name. Just my .02 worth.

Once I Received my RG Daytona on OF, I sold my SS 116520 to fund a WG Sub. The PM bug is real and wearing PM feels very nice. I don't really miss the SS Daytona at all.
