This vs. That

Atmos edition! I truly am becoming Paul...must be a former Naval Aviator thing (first the Corvette, now clocks ).

I've always wanted an Atmos; the love for mechanical things and the JLC heritage have always drawn me to them. I just never pulled the trigger because I don't trust the ones on the large auction site and I know they can be pricey in person.

Visited the local clock shop to get an estimate on the IWC table clock and he had a few Atmos' lying around. The fact that I can get one from a watchmaker who specializes in Atmos repair and at decent price ($600-650) is too good to pass up.

Now comes the This vs. That - which of the two below would you go for? I greatly prefer the LeCoultre branding of the 1st, but the 2nd is in better condition. Both run well.

Option 1 - $600
-100,000 serial, dating it to the 50's-60's
-LeCoultre branding on the dial
-more blemishes, as you can see on in pictures 2 and 3...especially picture 2, where you can see inside the housing

Option 2 - $650
-500,000 serial, possibly from the 70's-80's
-Atmos branding on the dial
-cleaner version except for the rusted nails on top

I'd opt for the lecoultre myself, age before beauty xD the older the better IMO.

Though they're both attractive.

You could pull a true Paul move, haggle him down a bit and snag both

They both look fantastic Jesse.

I guess I’d buy the one you want most, provided you can refurbish for a decent price … is that even an option?

Presuming they're both functioning at the same level, I would definitely go for #1. Specifically for the LeCoultre branding on it. As far as damages, that's a function of age, use, and time. It's part of the story of the clock and wouldn't bother me.

By the way, if you don't buy #1, any interest in sharing with me where it is? I might want to buy it! :)

I wish I could mix and match, as I'd take the Lecoultre dial in the 1st and the condition of the 2nd! This is just like hunting for that vintage piece that we want to be perfect, at the perfect price as well.

I don't know that I'd refurbish the 1st if I do go with it. I don't want to put more money into it than purchase price, as the clocks are running well otherwise.

Honestly, I'm just happy to have the option of either at a local price.

#1 for all the reasons you pointed out and the wear isn't an eye sore.

I would buy #2. The condition won’t cost more later. If you consider the refurb costs on #1, what is the total price? Is the branding worth that to you?

In that case, I'd lean toward the Lecoultre dial. To me of thats the one you want, the difference in condition seems minimal (at least in those pictures).

Besides, its a clock that's 60+ years old.

Out of interest, which one would you go for Paul - I assume the rusted screws on #2 are an easy fix?

Either is a great choice, tho I'd get the one with best condition movement.

Oh, and also........

Yes, and if I were choosing I would also go for the LeCoulture, just an incredible movement. The screws are a super-easy fix

Jesse, do you remember the “Cs” you are supposed to do when flying lost? The first is… CONFESS. I am glad you are acknowledging the issue. Now, the answer is absolutely concerning VA assistance. Since we three are vets, and I have EXTENSIVE experience with VA counseling and group sessions, I will be glad to lead the two of you through this enlightening experience. When the meetings start, you introduce yourself like this: “Hi, my name is Paul, and I am a Dorklehead” Then every says: “Hi Dorklehead”

There IS hope guys, we will get through this.

I would opt for number 2. There’s a reason he’s selling number one for less money.

Confess, climb, conserve...

Appreciate the feedback, gents! Just asked the wife and she was like "LeCoultre looks very cool." Yet I'm still going back and forth in my head.

Paul, you would love this clock shop.
