It's funny you mention this subject.....
I had hundreds of vinyl records from the 70's that I got rid of 30 years ago.
In the past 10 years I've bought at least 100 new vinyl records that havene't been opened.....all stuff I owned during the 70's.

I would give ANYTHING to own a (NOS) Vintage Marantz Integrated Amp and Turntable playing through some JBL-L100's all from the early 70's.
Or a similar Pioneer set-up through Altec-Lansings....

I've looked online for a long time and either don't trust the information, or the stuff is beat-up, etc, etc.

So here is what I want to buy.....based upon quality, sound, and vintage look.
Luxman Integrated Amp and Turntable through Klipsch Heresy-III Speakers all for $12,000.

You guys have some cool gear.

We have a small house. In the interest of marital harmony and practicality my vintage stuff is in storage.

Phase Linear preamp, tuner and amp.

Pioneer CTF 900

Micro Seiki DQx 500 turntable.

Heil AMT 1b speakers. I really miss those the most.

IMHO nothing beats a true good analogue sound like my own system now quite old 30 years plus old. And most of the best HI-FI units used to be British, or British designed,I used to have a Pink Triangle Tarantella record deck with a Decca LG cartridge that was superb sound. And IMO the LP still has the edge on all digital music its a more warm feeling sound. My cd player is a Arcam Alpha 8SE,later had new module put in, to upgrade it to Alpha 9 its well past its sell by date, but still a fine sounding player. But still not as good with my ears as the Pink Triangle record deck, the most important thing with my Mission Cyrus amps, now they have been mono-ed is deliverance of high current output, that's what drives the speakers not so much watts. One of the best sounds I have ever heard was 15 watt valve amp, cannot remember the name, linked up to the Pink Triangle and my speakers. Now that sound was unbelievable, totally the best sound I have ever heard. Now the sound difference between the transistor, and valve amp well hard to explain, so I will say difference between chalk and a good cheese.

I want everyone on this thread to send me twenty dollars!!!!!!!!

True story: I am in my home office yesterday, listening to my Bose Companion 3 computer speakers (like I always do) while working. My desk is the only space in my home that does NOT have surround sound, I was always satisfied with the stereo of the Companion 3 system.

BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... Not after reading THIS thread I decided I HAD to have surround sound there too... Sooooo....

I ordered the Bose Companion 5, the one that emulates surround sound with the digital connection (USB) as opposed to the 3.5 mini my 3 has. So now my work space (desk) will have improved sound... ALL BECAUSE I WAS SO JEALOUS OF YOUR GUYS SET UPS!!!!

I will provide my PayPal account for easy transactions.

(P.S. Anybody interested in a slightly used Bose Companion 3 PC speaker system? )

What I find ironic is that the standards for video resolution continue to rise, yet the great audio standards achieved have dropped off in favor of compressed files and convenience. Glad to see some still have the flame for great audio.

Congrats, Paul! Good music reproduction is so much more important to me than a big honking HD video screen.

The sound of reel to reel was superb. These old formats held much more audio detail and had better bandwidth. I used to be into audio but don't bother anymore. If it is not recorded on a good source in the first place then no point.

Listening to Nirvana "Nevermind" on my Rega Planar 25 with an modified RB-300 tonearm and a Denon DL-103R cartridge modded by Peter Ledermann at Soundsmith. The LP came out 25 years ago this fall. Hard to believe it's been that long.

The record clamp is a signed Wayne Gretzky hockey puck. A little dig at the crazies over at the Vinyl Asylum forum who debate the sound improvements caused by dust on your $1000 cables. I told them "the veil was lifted" when I started using the Gretzky puck compared to a Brett Hull puck.

Haha - have the Marantz 2240 (and useless today decoder module) driving a some near new condition Klipsch Heresys that were originally sold at the PX in Manheim in 1986. My son is only authorized to go to volume level 4.

Drive them through some better BluRay players that analog out and you can have the old gear mix with the new. You are not going to get good surrounds sound but you may get some awesome sound

Hey Mark. I wanted to comment on your rig and music list.

I auditioned Klipsch speakers several (maybe 20 now?) years ago. Many models and price points. As well as others but to stay on topic... My take-away on Klipsch is that they are awesome for live recording reproduction. I mean you feel like you are in the club with a good small venue recording. But, they sounded a bit overly brassy and bordering on harsh for quiet, complex studio recordings. Even "pop" stuff like Aja started getting a bit fatiguing. My go to reference recording is Robbie Robertson's first record from 1987. "Somewhere down the crazy river" specifically. Anyway, based on your list I think you will be pleased with the Klipsh speakers but if you delve into other musical types I would avoid them.

I gravitate to the (difficult to do well) first order crossover models. I had Vandersteen model 1's for quite a while then went to the Thiels. Wow. The Thiels are on another plane of existence. I think Jim Thiel did some amazing work and I cannot recommend highly enough any model he designed. Sadly he is gone now but I still smile and tap my foot because of his efforts. Check em out if you get the chance.

Congrats, Paul! Good music reproduction is so much more important to me than a big honking HD video screen.
Interesting point. Video is better in every way, yet audio went to "bigger is better" with highly compressed recordings at higher and higher SPL's. Through seven or more discreet Chanel's... Been to a movie lately? Holy cow. You need a sub station per screen to run all the amps and the chilled system to keep them from going nuclear!

But, just like analogue recordings, film still surpasses digital. Sorry!

Have you seen my preamp? Sounds like... Well, nothing! As it should, but appears to have been designed by an alien species. The front panel is cast aluminum and that bit alone probably weighs ten pounds... It's like two inches thick, all curves and polished. It's down in the Drumgeon now since the little man is facinated by all things with buttons. The Perreaux only has two buttons but other things are just too much fun for him. Once he pulled the knob off my CD burner I knew it was time to pack it up. Bummer.

I just checked your pic - looks nice !

Gonna start reading somewhat more and see what I will get

Might take a while but I don't like to rush anyway

Maybe a nice Mark & Levinson or my old dream : an Accuphase

And would like to hear each playing on some MartinLogan electrostat

Or on a nice set of Nautilus
