If the movement was finished to a standard befitting the price tag, sure. As-is, it’s more like an embarrassment.

Rolex for me is centered around purpose built reliable watches. A display case has no functional advantage or history with Rolex (forget the odd ones out). And the movements also aren’t pieces of jewelry worth showing. Decrease in antimagnetic properties I’d assume also (at least before the new non-metal springs).

Hand finished in a dress piece, fine, although I could do without and keep the solid PM caseback instead.
In a sports watch, no. Defeats the whole point of being rugged. Don't like it. |

You could finish it off with a rubber band.

I prefer the feel of metal on the wrist, but don’t really care one way or the other.

I like it. If other brands are allowed to show off ETA movements, why not display Rolex's in-house craftsmanship? Plus, maybe they'll start to finish them off nicely like others have. Omega's movement is nothing special to look at, but to have a better (or same) depth rating AND give you that...why not?
Hell, there are tell-tale signs of a knockoff Omega movement with a see through case back. Make it easier to spot the free-sprung balance wheel without taking the case back off. |

Meh! Not a fan of see-thru case backs.

Sapphire is cheaper than gold. I do like the 1908 however. Not as fancy as some but not bad either. I'll let you know more when I see it in the flesh and have it on my wrist.

What is not to like? I personally love it.
As long as it's reserved for only special references, I think it's a homerun. Don't know how it could bother anyone since you can't even see it while wearing the watch. This is definitely only an issue for the most curmudgeon of TRF. |

No preference. Most of my other watches have sapphire backs but I prefer to look at the front of them.

I think they real question is if Rolex decides to up their game in hand finished movements because there's a real opporutnity there. Imagine being able to order with a surcharge of 10k for an even better looking movement. I'm sure the market is there, and with their size they can hire enough people to fulfill demand.

Well to be fair I did it way before Rolex
This is my 116523 from 2014 My only knock is it’s kinda like putting a Corvette engine in a Ferrari. What I mean is Rolex should’ve done something different with the movement finishing on the 506 versus just slapping in the exact same movement from a 15k watch in to a 80k watch. Obviously it’s gotta be the same movement but just spend a little bit more time on the anniversary model. Something different

I think it is a good move for the 1908.

I have always associated a see through caseback with a replica watch.
I think this is a bad move for Rolex. It goes against the tool watch heritage they made their money on. Sent from my Apple privacy invasion product |

If a watch I liked had one, I'd still buy it. It's not necessarily a selling point for me but it's not a detractor either.

While I may be in the minority I actually like the looks of their movement. Do we know for sure the movement isn't decorated to a higher standard?
