Fake Rolex 1016?
Hi Rolex gurus,
I think I did a huge mistake by buying this and I am completely new to the fake dial/fake watch/ frankenwatch spotting and wanted to know your thoughts on the following watch. Is there anything that seems off? Does the dial look fake? What about the caseback? I just wanted to know what potential giveaways you experts could see with this particular piece. Thanks for educating me on this topic:) Best, Todi95 |

Can you explain why you think it's fake?

just because the caseback engraving looks a bit too faint and sloppy. And the price was a bit too good to be true. That´s why I wanted to check in with some experts here to get a sense. Just a gut feeling though. I guess from your comment that the watch looks ok?

Can you post some better, clearer, in-focus photos? At least one straight on of the dial. And in natural light, not with a flash.
How “too good” was the price? And was it purchased from a dealer or shop, or just some random seller? |

The price was 5200 Euro and I offered 4800 which the seller accepted immediately, so very competitive pricing. Seller is just a random private person but has been an ebay member since 2002 and has 100% rating. However, he does not want to send me additional fotos since he is "500km away from home". I could pay him via paypal and then there is ebays money back guarantee. But my whole conversation with the seller was very uncooperative and quite off so far. So I wonder if I should even pay or just cancel the transaction.

Seems very unlikely to be successful to me. I would be looking to cancel the transaction and keep looking.
If you do get any more photos there is not really any way to be sure that's the watch you will receive. Also, if they're 500km away from the watch how are they going to send it? |

I wouldnt even proceed with payment if the watch turns out to be ok. You're taking a big risk here. No extra pics, not cooperative..... Move on and find a good honest seller.

If the seller won't send you additional photos, he most likely does not have the watch pictured in his possession. I would pass.

.
You bought a watch from a seller with limited feedback. His other sale, a Rolex 116515, two days ago for about $13k should lead you to all you need to know... |

Can't make out the Swiss at the 6 o'clock.
Very difficult to confirm visually without better and more photos. From what I see of the 1570 movenent, it looks correct. I would pass though on a uncooperative seller. |

I wouldn't necessarily take 100% positive feedback and being a long-standing eBay member to be signs of a totally reputable seller. I foolishly bought a 'probably too good to be true' watch from such a seller several years ago, and it turned out the account had been hacked. Managed to get the money back eventually, but was a hassle. Hope it works out OK for you.

I think it is legit but photos are lousy. Legit photos does not also indicate possession.
If you have seller protection you have more safety if going through Ebay.

2nd pic: Springbar extending through lug hole. Indication of thin lugs, which is obvious anyway

That’s not necessarily the case with 1016. Correct spring bars have shorter pins specifically designated for the watch (20mm, sport model diameter but shorter pins than GMT/Sub) because 1016 had skinny lugs from the factory compared to other sport modes. I can’t speak for the authenticity of the piece but the lug thickness looks fine from the photos. Likely just got wrong/generic spring bars.

I realize that people are skeptical and picking apart the watch, but if you paid 4800 Euros through eBay for this watch from a plausible seller with previous feedback, then I think it was worth trying. If the seller is attempting a scam, eBay will protect you, even though it might take a while. And if you actually receive a legit 1016 for that price, then it's a great score, even if the watch has some issues.
It's always a good idea to do a reverse image search if you're unsure. Scammers usually just grab photos from previous listings, and the photos are often easy to find.

If that's a fake it's well done, coronet looks just like the one on my wrist (service dial tho') and I'd rather have the (correct) minute hand on OP's watch than the (short) one on mine!
