Thoughts on this 16800

Thinking about pulling the trigger on this. I like the blueish bezel tint and the slight fading of the indices. What are your thoughts on this specific piece, and the 16800 in general?

Good choice...first sub reference with sapphire crystal...i have one and i have four different inserts with it....looks like a piece from Curtis's stock. Can't go wrong with a five digit sub with sapphire. Buy the dealer.

The symmetry is off - have a local AD, watch seller or watchmaker take a look to open up and verify.
Be very careful!!

Watch is from Curtis at Grey and Patina, one of the better-known vintage dealers out there.

There are also pics of the watch with the case back open and I spoke to him about this specific watch. Not concerned about the seller, more the condition (like the chamfers others have mentioned).

Are you referring to the symmetry of the lugs? If so, not a worry. As seen in catalogues from the era, lugs were hand-cut and not symmetrical.
Here’s a 1983 catalogue pic of a GMT showing very asymmetrical lugs

As others mentioned, the chamfers are cut improperly for a 1980s watch. The taper becomes way too wide as it progresses from the top of the chamfer to the bottom of the lug.

Thanks for the input, all.

I do think that I'll move with the purchase, as I like everything else about the watch (insert color, dial, etc) and I can live with the shape of the case, as it is something I'd like to wear in rotation on a leather strap; it's also at the pricepoint that I want to be in, so that always plays a part. Blasphemous these days, I know, as everyone seems to be moving towards the "unpolished" look, but that's just something that isn't as big of a concern for me.

At the end of the day, I'll be wearing it for my enjoyment and don't expect too many Rolex hawks in my daily comings and goings to notice the chamfer shape...which I actually find attractive on this watch.

I truly do appreciate the opinions though!

I seen that watch when it was first listed, the dial and faded bezel certainly caught my eye. Congrats if you end up with the purchase.

Were chamfers cut differently in the 60s?
