I'm new to this forum, but have perused the 'net for info on Rolexes and it seems that the Sports models are far more popular than DateJusts among enthusiasts?

Just wondering if you were going to get your first Rolex what would you get? I originally wanted the TT DateJust, but the Submariner has recently caught my full attention. Seems like a very beautiful, more versatile watch. It's also a bit cheaper, which is a bonus.

And yes, I know it's a personal choice, blah blah blah. But what are your thoughts on what the best first (and potentially only) Rolex for a man in his early 30's to get is and why?

i like the submariner. it's a classic look whether you're in your 30s, 40s, etc. i went to vegas about 16 years ago and i remember seeing a business man wearing a tt submariner (black dial)...drove me nuts. of course i was young at that time and could even afford one.

Welcome New Yorker,

I have had only 1 watch for the past 12 years, a SS Sub-Date. I think the SS Subs are the the watch to have, particularly if you only have one Rolex. They look great with a suit or jeans, and their durability is legendary. Prior to the Sub I owned a TT Datejust for 10 years, but I found that I didn't wear it all the time because I felt it was a bit too dressy for my taste. With the Sub on the other hand, I wear it all the time. I don't think you will ever regret buying a Sub.

TT Blue Sub - the only Rolex I ever really pined after and 2 years on I still love it. Wear it every day, everywhere - fantastic watch. Never missed a beat and just glows every day. As for the others, I have no experience so can only vouch for what I know.

What I would say is that if you like the look - you will not be disapointed!

I highly recommend the Submariner! A true classic! Very versatile and just a beauty. I'm a gal and have owned mine for close to 3 years. Still love it!

Both the DJ and Sub will serve you well whether dressing up or down. But if I was only going with one Rolex it would be a Sub.

i'm not sure subs are as versatile as some say - a suit and sub doesn't mix imo. i think an all stainless dj or an exp are far more versatile.

I wanted a TT DJ for my 1st Rolex many years ago. I could only afford the SS Sub. It has been an awesome watch. So much so that when I could afford a TT I got a TT Sub. I can't see getting another Rolex. (well, maybe a Pepsi GMT).

The Submariner is a difficult watch to beat, but I suppose it depends on things like wear you work--do you have to wear a suit most of the time? If you do, I would suggest the Datejust, but the Submariner is a reliable and excellent all around watch. If picking just one, I would recommend the submariner.

I just bought my first rolex last week and it is a TT Sub, but Now I can see why people would want to own more than one rolex....I am not sure what is next, only time will tell.

I own a DJ but ss/wg and a sub. A TT DJ can be a bit dressy but a SS wears well with jeans or a suit. A sub is an awesome watch too. I have a 1680 that I bought new at 15 years of age. Worked all summer for it so I have to say I have a soft spot for the Sub. It is a dilemna you will have to work through. Can't go wrong with either.

Difficult because these are VERY different watches. So consider . . .

TT Datejust will fall in value once purchased. SS Sub will retain value for many years. I FAR prefer two tone so I buy what I want and don't worry about resale, just what I want on my wrist.

Aesthetically, they are VERY different watches. I have never been a big fan of the Datejust (however, I do like the newer DD

). Also, not a huge fan of the Sub (although I have tremendous respect).

Ultimately, I think it depends on what you will be doing while you wear the watch. If it's pure business, never a "sporty" activity, then I would go with the two-tone DJ. If I enjoyed the beach or were a diver, or just planned on putting my watch through different ordeals, I would buy the Sub.

I have been wearing a suit and a SS Sub date for the better part of 20 yrs and they go great together IMO. Sure other watches are more "formal" but I certainly have never been ashamed to wear my Sub with any attire.

But if you want the PERFECT blend between the two and can do without the date feature, get the Explorer. It is my very strong opinion that there is no watch that looks better with anything, in any situation.

You guys are very helpful. Enablers, but helpful!

This is a luxurious problem indeed. On the one hand, the TT DJ looks like my uncle's watch that I remember growing up and seeing and wishing one day to own a watch like that. On the other hand, the Sub has a lot of cool factor to it, but perhaps a smidge less "wow" when trying to make a successful first impression on folks who may not be versed in all things Rolex.

Also, do you think the Sub looks too close to the black Tag Automatic Carrera (not the chrononograph, the simple basic Carrera)? My wife thinks so, especially the bracelet.

So confused!
