How bad is this pitting?
I found an Explorer 1016 from someone who bought it from HQ Milton many years ago. The listing is still there, I can't post a link but you can find it by searching for "1016 1986" on hqmilton's website.
The external condition is excellent. My only concern is the picture with the case back removed (second to last picture). I think this is what's called pitting. I'm not concerned about the cosmetic inside the case back, but does this affect the longevity of the watch? Is there anything that can be done to prevent further damage? |

Unless you intend taking it swimming the pitting is not an issue. It doesn’t look too serious and can be fixed if necessary.

Pitting is not terrible so do not dive with it, but be sure to weigh it against everything else.

They leave the gasket in for almost all of their photos for all watches.

Doesn't look bad to me, and it's normal to have a gasket in place like that when photographing the movement, unless it comes out on its own when the caseback is removed.

Personal preference of course but there are too many clean cases around to bother with case cancer. Same with a gasket conveniently left in the very area you need to check, red flag to me.
I much prefer this... ..to this.:) |

Hard pass for me as well. Like Richard said .... there’s way too many watches available that aren’t pitted. I can’t understand how anyone can say that pitting doesn’t matter, it matters.

What does the front look like? It’s not ideal to have that much pitting and hard to tell depth vs surface from the one pic. Slight corrosion can be mitigated and probably not a bad issue if kept away from moisture.

Doesn't look too bad to me from what I can see. My guess is that it will pass a reasonable pressure test.

Pitting is fine as long as the watch is priced right, unless you absolutely need to go swimming with it. It's not an issue for everyday wearing.

Nobody needs to, or should be swimming with these vintage pieces. Not a wise move. Agree that most minor case pitting is not typically an issue for everyday wearing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
