5205, Datograph or Zeitwerk
Very different models I know. Thinking about consolidating and purchasing my 1st PP or ALS. I have always loved the 5205r and 5205g. Which do you prefer, white or rose gold? Also, would you choose it over a 1st generation datograph or the Zeitwerk in Rose gold silver dial?
I know dress watches are out of fashion, however, as an attorney, I wear a suit or blazer during the week so I frequently wear a dress watch. Also, it seems to be a good time to buy a dress PP or ALS as the used market seems to be dropping...what are your thoughts and thanks in advance for any responses. |

I'd go for the Dato 39mm Romans, the ZW is a great concept but seemed a bit brittle and when the sales lady was scrolling rapidly thru all the numbers to set the time it just seemed like a ticking time bomb to me.

Dato among your options, but I would also consider some of the 5170s such as the 5170P or the black dial 5170G-010 w Breguet numbers. I'd likely prefer those over your options as most 5170s look more modern than the Dato IMO and are less unusual and more under the radar than the Zeitwerk while the 5205s just don't do much for me in general.

I know the 5170 is popular and I tried one on today...it just doesn't sing to me for some reason. I tried on the dato again today and loved it. Seems to wear a bit small. If I throw in the 5960 would that change your opinions? I am considering it as well as it seems that it can be dressed up or down...

What you put on your wrist should reflect who you are, not what others want to see or what they would recognize. I vote 5205R-001, but I’m biased as that’s what I’ve got on my wrist (btw it gets noticed, and although most people don’t know what it is, they immediately get a sense it must be something).
Get what speaks to you. The people that know you will “get it”, and they’ll also understand why you got it. |

Zeitwerk is one of my grails so I would go with that. You can't go wrong with a dato or 5205 though.

Which dial are you thinking for the 5205? I do like the blue dial 5205G-013. The 5905P is also worth considering.
Of the two Langes, I'd probably go with the original Datograph. It's a classic design. I have a Zeitwerk, while a very cool watch, it's not an everyday watch, both because of its looks and it's not the most comfortable watch to wear. |

I love the dial layout of the 5205 for an AC, but somehow on the wrist it just doesn’t feel right to me.
If an AC isn’t a big draw for you, then I’d go dato Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

I would go for the Datograph up/down. .. I own it and love it.. I like having a PR indicator-- probably other than time and date the only really important complication on a mechanical watch. I considered the Zeitwerk several times but as others have told me-- the novelty of that watch does wear off over time. I also generally like steel, white gold or platinum but with the Datograph-- the rose gold just compliments the dial so nicely. I have a small wrist and it is not my most comfortable watch. I had ordered a tang buckle to replace the deployment but in the end -- kept the deployment buckle.

Thanks to everyone for all the insights. After much soul searching, it is between the original Dato and the 5205g -013 but I am starting to lean towrds the 5205g . I will keep you posted!

Datograph. ALS has far surpassed PP in terms of quality in the last few years. I am still a fan of PP but they have lost their way. Bigger cases and louder dials while their movements have not changed. I am a purist who thinks the 3970 and 3940 are the best PP has ever had to offer so...let the beating commence.
Regardless, buy what you love and sod the rest of us. |

Isn't the zeitwerk pretty thick? I remember it being pretty chunky when I tried it on at my local AD |

Everyone hates when people do this but for my money I’d entertain a Journe Resonance.

I had a first gen dato
I loved the look, but found it too thick for the size. It felt top heavy and I ended up trading for a grande lange 1 mp. I have the 5205 and love it. That and my Lange are my two calendar/moonphase watches. I think the 1815 chrono feels more balanced. The dato up down is more balanced too. I have the Journe centigraph, thats an amazing chrono.
