Reference - J or R for Rose Gold?

Noob question - why does Patek sometimes use J or R interchangeably when referring to rose gold watches? I'm sure I'm missing something. Just makes it challenging to search for more details on a watch I'm looking for... TIA!

that's actually a much more straight forward answer than I was expecting... in which case, there's just a bunch of mis-labeled/mis-matched vintage pateks on chrono24 ... thank you!

i guess maybe one follow up question would be - is there a way to distinguish yellow from rose gold on vintage pateks without any papers? i feel like they look very similar after years of tarnishing and/or sometimes poor quality photos.

Historically yellow gold (J) was the most common metal used for Patek watches. They started using rose gold (R) more over the past 15-20 years.

So if you find a vintage R Patek, it will have a higher premium than the J. To most of us, unless you place a J right next to a R, it is hard to distinguish them if seen alone, especially the vintage pieces. Best way is to check papers. If papers are not available, you can request papers (Extract form the Archives) from Patek for a fee.

More specifically:

J = Jaune (French for yellow)
R = Rose in both French and English

Yeah, sometimes dealers on Chrono24 post photos that might not be related to the description at all.
I remember seeing an add for a 5270R and priced in the 5270R but the photo was for a 5204R…which is a lot more than a 5270.
Now I don’t know if that was done on purpose or was an honest mistake. So it won’t surprise me if there are mislabeled ads on C24

And in case the OP is wondering, that's the reason why A = Steel (Acier).
