5167A trade out - stupid idea?

Hi guys

I am currently thinking about trading off my 2009 5167A Geneva Seal with the following quartet of watches:

Patek Philippe Calatrava 5296G-001
IWC Pilot's Watch Top Gun Ceramic IW326901,
Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe 38 mm 5100B 1110 B52A and
Jaeger LeCoultre Master Control Moon Phase 1368480.

Am I stupid to consider to let go of my beloved Aquanaut in exchange for all of the above 4 watches (the 5296G would be used the rest would be new)?

I would like to start a watch collection, but as of now I "only" own the Aquanaut.

Kind regards

It's not a stupid idea, it's just pointless. Unless there's a watch in that basket that you've been lusting for, you are simply allowing someone else to unload all his cold pieces for your hot one. Better to find two watches that you have to have and trade your Aquanaut for them, like a Rolex Daytona and a Rolex GMT.
But remember, boredom is the enemy of the collector and you don't build a great collection by trading down.

Trade upwards, not downwards. Once you have a Patek, it’s better to get something higher standing than going the other direction. So my answer is NO for the trade.

I'd do it, you're bringing in variety. That's been the biggest joy of expanding my collection, there are so many great timepieces out there on both price spectrums (and the middle too) from many manufacturers. I'm working on the Panerai trilogy right now, already have most Rolex I want, and hopefully soon MB&F.

Have fun!

To me you answered your question calling it "my beloved Aquanaut". Think how hard or expensive it will be to replace it.

I vote NO and if I were you, I will add 1 dress watch that you like.

So, you will have 1 casual and 1 dress watch.

It’s a definite NO from me.

I would much rather have a 5167A as my only watch for a while and then save up and add something like a 5196G. That would be a pretty amazing pairing for anyone as a 2 watch, cover all bases collection.

I’d buy all four to trade with you. And I don’t even love the 5167.

If you have completely lost love for the 5167 than do it! But there's no way I'd do this. If you have doubts I think you'll regret it.

I'd keep the 5167 and little by little add the pieces you want.

I wouldn't do that trade, all the watches you mentioned (except the 5296) can be bought at a steep discount. only your 5167 sells for more than retail

Nope, I would keep the 5167A and add a dress watch. The JLC is nice if you don't want to spent a ton.

I wouldn't, especially with your Geneva seal Aquanaut (which for some reason I prefer over the PP seal)

A 4 carat diamond is worth more than four 1 carat diamonds.

I’d keep it. I’d never let go of my 3 hander aquanaut but that’s me.

The best advice I've read in the thread is always trade up, not down. If you feel like getting a dressier (but still somewhat sporty) piece, I'd trade that 5167 towards a datograph.

Did you want and were you ready to pull the trigger on any of those watches before the trade was offered? Like not and hence no

Stupid idea. Why you need to have 4 watches in 1 shot? Save money and then start to add

Prefer to keep the more desirable piece and add something when the time is right.

I would not do this trade.

Its not a question of money but more a fact that you won't be able to easily replace the 5167a due to supply.

Any of the other watches can easily be had any time, so you can save up and buy them at your convenience.

For example if you want to get a 5296G, to complement your aquanaut, you can pick one up 2nd hand any time at a hefty discount to retail even a few years down the line.

My exact sentiments. And I couldn’t fathom trading away my 5167A; I think you’d regret the trade OP

Thank you, guys.

Your opinions are much appreciated and I get the point :)

I will keep my 5167A and add some of the other watches to my collection when the time is right.
