Authentication help?

Came across this gold date. I'm more of a sport model guy. Would you mind giving me your opinion on whether it checks out please? I don't have the ability to handle it in person or have it authenticated. The price currently sits somewhere between "too good to be true" and "yeah, why not?"

Looks to be cap gold, not solid gold, which might explain the low price.

It is gold capped but looks to be in great condition otherwise. The gold is usually chipping away on the lugs and I dont see any signs of it here.

Lovely and faded? To me that looks water-stained (particularly between the 7 and 8 markers), blemished, and damaged (rust colored stain around the 6 marker).

What is the asking?
I think the watch is authentic and I am fascinated with this model as it's the only Rolex that masquerades as gold. I am not sure when, but could see these becoming collectible as they are so oddball.

That could very well be the crystal. Hard to tell without looking at it in person.

For a watch like this, with a price bracket that you're describing, with an engraved case back, and unknown service history, I would say you should be in the $2000-$2500 range.

Looks legit to me at first glance, but obviously not something to over-pay on, especially in the current environment.

It would have been a great buy at anything under $2000 IMO. Its a nice example of a gold capped Rolex. They are usually really beat up on the lugs.

Wow. A thousand for that? Pretty much the deal of the century. Movements from these sell for double that quite easily

That would have been a steal. Serviced/cleaned up this is a $2500-$3000 watch.

You are probably right but I still love the rugged faded look…

Just to clarify, the OP mentioned that he stopped bidding at $1k. We don't know the hammer price.

I believe this is a model 15505? I used to own one of these with a champaigne dial from 1984. A couple years ago I let it go because it was 34mm which I thought was too small and also because it was gold capped and not solid gold. I sold it on craigslist for $1500. Had previously bought it off ebay for $1300. This was about 3 years ago I'd say.
