I have had plastic lensed RB’s where the coating on the inside and outside of the lenses started coming off from the oils in my skin. I sent them back to RB and they sent me a brand new pair. The same thing happened to that pair within 6-8 months and then RB wouldn’t replace them again without charging. If I have the pair still I will take a pic of them when I get home. My wife and I have spent the majority of our time for many, many years enjoying outdoor activities. Having tried way too many sunglasses, settled in many years ago on 4 brands:
Oakley- everyday, for pretty much any activity. Costa- mainly offshore and inshore fishing. Smith- Fly fishing. Randolph- Clay target competition.

only have 2 pairs, both from Bottega Veneta. The older Japan-made pair in titanium is better quality than the newer Italian-made pair.

I was Oakley only for several years, and more recently branched out to Maui Jim after having great results with a prescription pair. I like both, but tend to use the Oakley shades when there is a chance of damage during activities, otherwise I prefer the Maui Jim's for comfort. Just the other day I decided to get a fun pair of Prada sunglasses just to try something different.

I have a few pair of these - in a couple i swapped out the lenses for prescription. Super high quality frames, which I love, but I found the lenses that came with them were lacking when it came to being anti-glare. The swap fixed that.

What sunglasses are you wearing
Persols that my wife got me. I also have a pair of Kirkland polarized aviator style shades that stay in the car. I like the style of the Persols but the quality is about the same as the Kirklands that sell at 1/10th the price

Lol, yes they were "genuine". Thank you for your concern. The coating on the plastic lens Ray Bans started krinkling around the edges & flaking. The first pair were 8 months old when it started. They fully warranted that pair. The second pair started at about 13 months. They hid behind their 12 month warranty & wouldn't replace them. I replaced them with the Costas, made sure they were glass. Threw the Ray Bans in the trash.

Maui Jim has the best glass (super thin glass). The world literally looks better with the glasses on than without. Best acetate frames are Jacques Marie Mage.
SALT also makes good sunglasses, including some super useful gradient polarized lenses that will allow you to cut the glare on the road but still check your mapping app. Randolph are fun for the pedigree, and they have great discounts at the end of summer. |

My husband’s late stepfather was a huge “sunglasses guy,” and he swore by Maui Jim.
My own optical shops tell me that Maui Jim, Persol and Ray Ban all have good frames and lenses. I don’t require any corrective lenses. I’ve been sticking with those three for over 15 years. My current pair are Ray Bans. |

I picked up a pair of RayBan New Wayfarers last week. I had the original Wayfarers years ago but they were heavy and uncomfortable. These are much lighter and very comfortable and the style is classic.

I got some Mau Jims, here I am modelling them during the 1 hr 27 mins of sunshine that Northern England sweltered under last year during the lockdown. The layering of my hair is testament to the lack of skill during my many lockdown haircuts. As an aside, the tint of grey in my hair is looking very "George Clooney" like. Unnervingly, the ladies haven't been falling over themselves for a date with me, may have to get Ray Bans.
I must have seen something funny. As you can see I am in uncontrollable fits of laughter.

I have quite a few pairs of Persols, Ray Ban Aviators and Wayfarers, and a couple of Oakleys.
I recently had cataract surgery. It has been life changing. I can now buy sunglasses off the shelf without a prescription. |

I have many different brands and pairs. Some I have paid for and others I have not.
1. Maui Jims - probably my favorite but none of the 3 pair I have did I pay for. If I had to buy them myself I would not. I feel they are overpriced for what you get. My opinion of course. 2. Ray Ban - I have a pair of Aviators and I like them. For the money they are adequate. A little flimsy I think. I paid for these. 3. Randolph - I have a pair of their Aviators. Far better quality than Ray Ban Aviators and they are worth the money. I got these on an incredible sale they have once a year. These are very durable and are very comfortable. They are my most worn pair hands down. 4. Tom Ford wayfarer style. These look the most dressy. They are also very comfortable. I would not and do not think they are worth full MSRP but I got a pair at a very good discount so I feel they are worth that. 5. Oakley - purpose built and my go to sunglass for golfing. That is literally all I wear them for. In the golf bag and stay in the golf bag. They make a specific lense for golfing that is great as my eyes just lose the ball all the time and these help. |
