If you went into an AD and said you wanted to trade the Lange for a Daytona - would they find one in the safe? Might ask for a Date just or Air King thrown in too.

How long have you had the Lange (follow up: are you tired of it?)? Has your lifestyle changed? For example, did you previously wear a suit everyday for work and needed a classic watch but now retired and hang out at the pool all day or tinker on vintage Porsches?

Answers about your lifestyle may be the best information to access which watch may be better for you.

Having said all of that, I can tell you that the black (specifically) Daytona is the one watch I would take if I could only have one watch. Like the classic black Sub, it is a perfect daily driver that can do anything from bathing suit to business suit to tux … but it is much more special than the Sub. I absolutely adore mine!

I'm +1 with Doug on this.

The fact that you are already considering the trade gives insight to what you really want of the two...

That Lange is fantastic. I wouldn't do it.

Please no. This would be akin to when tiger decided to nail washed up waitresses when he had Elin at home.

The good news is that the price on pre-owned black continues to drop and seems to be in the $35-36k range. If it gets below $30k, I'll probably have to buy one and keep the Lange.

Bear in mind that secondary market values are all essentially hype-based - i.e. almost entirely determined by fickle consumer whim.

Please keep the Lange. In terms of horology it's an order of several magnitudes "better".

Are you sure about that? In normal use the the Lange gives you two timezones, has a power reserve meter and tells you the date, and.....

the Rolex lets you measure how long you can hold your breath.

I think a lot of people get caught up with the "trade" word. I'm not a fan of dress watches; i find them much less versatile than sports watches. These days, a submariner looks fine with swim trunks as well as with a suit. Dress watches cant do that. If you are not wearing it and you want to dump it... I dont see what the issue is. If you happen to then use the proceeds to buy something you will want to wear even better.

If you need to sell a piece to buy a piece then the comparison is inevitable. But if you are selling a piece you dont wear and you decide to buy something that you will.... it really doesnt matter how they compare.

So the question to ask is: Do you want to keep the lange? If yes then dont trade it for a daytona. If no then easy sell and go buy a daytona.

No way. The Daytona could be the most overrated, overhyped watch on the planet. Keep the Lange, buy a Zenith EP Chronosport.

i'd say do it if it were a PM Daytona.... SS not so much. I'd keep the Lange in this scenario. Lange is the 'better' watch here.

As a multiple Daytona owner, NEVER do that !!! Never ! Your LS is 100 levels up and a source of plesure. It's temporary i think, like a bout of fever, an illusion

So trade a Lange, for a chronograph that broke no new ground and for the dough is not even legible. No. I mean other than Daytona hype, it not even close here. And I don't buy that the daytona is the better wearability. Its not legible and has no date and again for what purpose. If you only had one watch, again the Daytona would not beat the sub date or a DJ either. Tune out the hype and what do you have with the Daytona. A watch that broke no new ground and is only famous for celebrity (salad dressing guy) affiliation. Hard pass.

I agree with you, but I think the sad sentiment here is more that the two watches are somehow equal in current market value, when anyone with a clue knows how clearly unmatched they are in quality.

I wouldnt do it. In reality, the daytona is a 14k$ watch, the hype doesnt make it compare to a 50k$ watch
I would keep the Lange

i would wear the Lange with a suit or jeans, i would never touch a daytona with a 1000ft pole

Hard pass. Won't do that trade. Perhaps if you are simply looking to switch it up (and most people just want change vs. the actual watch) consider switching up for a new Lange, Patek, etc. I think that would be more on par.

As much as I love the Daytona myself. Certainly not worth value at this moment.

Interesting how many responses treat this as a stupid question, even though the watches are of relatively equal secondary market value and this is a Rolex forum. I wonder how many would actually pick the Lange if they were given ~$35k and told they had to buy one of the two watches.

Daytona is a fun piece. The Lange is an homage to the art and craft of horology. No way would I trade. One never knows what prices may do - but to me its like trading a Van Gogh for a Warhol.
