Market has already crashed. If you pay more than mid-teens, you just lost thousands until it corrects.

Friend just bought one with an overpriced ridley service for less than 15k. I was the former owner, so he called me asking about it. Thick case. Matching dial and hands, correct FF insert.

Couldn’t agree more. There’s a lot of half decent stuff around. The really good pieces still fetch top top prices.

So true...here is an “after” shot of my Maxi MK1 with the chamfers restored via a proper polishing by LAWW. Such a classic look...don’t think I could ever part with this one.

Here's mine from 1964 - all original, glossy gilt dial and gilt hands. Post a pic of yours!
Another gilt/gloss, from '65.

I think these early gilt dials, although hard to find, are hard to top. This one was a barn find a few years ago.

Hi Zapokee, All original except the outer bezel which was changed because I lost the bead at the top. The rest is all original and was worn continuously for over 47 years, until I bought a second Rolex for my 70th birthday last year.

When I read that a case has been refinished, I understand that the value of your watch crashed on the market !

As far as pricing goes, nice examples of Subs, GMTs, Daytonas etc. are definitely selling well and are in demand. The mediocre watches seem over-priced with sellers trying to ride the coattails of the nicer examples being offered for sale.
So, you're saying Sub, GMT, and Daytonas are selling well and are in demand? Hmmmm I hadn't heard about this... LOL just having a bit of fun but seriously I think at least some of us are aware of those watches....

Hi Bill,

You've worn it for longer than I've been alive, so far be it from me to teach you anything :-)

The insert (i.e., the black ring; the "bezel" is the silver ring around that) is indeed a thin-font replacement. It looks like the minute/hour hands may have also been changed at service - see how they're a different color from the markers on the dial. The second hand color matches the dial. Hands and dial sometimes age differently, but a color difference this large would suggest replacement.

It doesn't appear to be a gilt/glossy dial from the photo - the text is white rather than gold. The depth notation is meters first, which is rarer that feet first and commands something of a premium among collectors.

I'll bow out here as an enthusiast rather than an expert. You've worn it for so long - I'd keep enjoying it if I were you.

That lack of hassle seems to be one reason why vintage time-only watches do so well over their date counterparts. Quickset models are quickly gaining for that reason. People want the vintage look but with modern usability.

Absoutely correct, imo! Setting the date on a vintage piece requires patience. You have to love the piece, and/or plan to wear it daily for a period of time.

I bought a m first with box, papers and original rivet bracelet in 2011 (serviced by Bob Ridley) and was just looking at what they are going for today and was shocked at how much they have gone up! Came hear to see what others are saying and saw this thread - so I am not imagining it!
