1935ish Rolex Doctor’s watch help

Kinda at a loss here guys and new to all this. Going through Gramp’s stuff and found a watch of his and it looks to be a mid 30’s Rolex doctors watch. It says Rolex on the front, on the band, and on the guts of the watch... but the inside of the back cover says Gruen. I have read up on the history of the 2 but still confused. Maybe it just had the back replaced? Or is it maybe a Gruen using Rolex parts? What would yall think and how to find someone who could look at it personally?

Trying to figure that out, Trying to get some opinions. I would think maybe he just lost the back but as close as these two companies were, who knows?

This also may help explain the similarities between The Gruen and Rolex Doctors watches http://www.pixelp.com/gruen/1922.html

Back in the early days both Rolex and Gruen shared the Aegler movement facilities.

Since it appears that the dial has been completely re-done, it may be impossible to know. The movement may have been changed at some point, or it may be a marriage of parts to get what you have.

1935ish Rolex Doctor’s watch help

The arrangement with Aegler went on for quite a while. But it was limited to watch movements. I’m not sure Gruen and Rolex jointly fabricated cases, but it is possible someone had the dial “rebranded”.

Back in the ‘30’s, Rolex couldn’t buy movements from any manufacturer other than Aegler. And Aegler couldn’t sell to another watch brand. Rolex stuck to the deal into modern times except for chronographs that Zenith made.

So, in terms of production, Rolex movements were exclusive and produced by a manufacturer named Rolex. But the works were run by Aegler as a sub. In 2004 Rolex took control over Aegler/Rolex Bienne to integrate it into their S.A.

I think you have an assemblage - an Aegler/Rolex movement in a Gruen case with a rebranded dial - but striking one nonetheless.
