Hi all,
Been threatening to purchase a Rolex for decades. I dithered about buying mid priced swiss brands and was fairly loyal to Tag Heuer since 2003 until I started to do my homework and realise what was inside them. As I have got older I started to move away from the larger diver style watches a) because I hate getting wet and b) they are just too chunky and heavy on the wrist. So the search started and I wittled it down to either Omega and Rolex. I know the history of both brands, however, Omega’s just don’t have a style that I really like right now. I appreciate their quality but wondered if I would always regret an Omega purchase over a Rolex one. I have always fancied a Sub, however, the ubiquitous flashiness of it and the ever increasing price scared me off. I wanted a more under the radar style that was less obvious and also didn’t want a model with lots of complications to the movement which I wouldn’t use and that could possibly add to service costs in future. So being on a restricted budget I narrowed it down to the 39mm Explorer. I found a recognised indie specialist of Rolex in the UK and followed their stock for 18-24 months. I finally found a nice 2015 model ( see pic ) at a fair price which I put a deposit down. I told the dealer that I would meantime be interested in trading up to the latest model if one became available. A few weeks went by when yesterday I got a mail and pics to inform me that a late 2016 has come in and it has my name on it! Really excited to finally becoming the owner of this. I have sold 3 decent watches and 2 good US guitars ( big guitar fan too ) to scrape the money together for it. I feel it’s time I deserved it. Hope you lot can convince me that I am doing the right thing.

Cheers Folks, my only concern is that I might feel it a bit big on my wrist compared to my previous watches. It’s difficult to judge by looking at pics on the web & you tube.I have a wrist size just over 7 inches and I thought 39mm would be perfect for my sized wrist but I understand the Explorer sits bigger than 39. Any thoughts on that? Anyway, I am going to find out next Saturday for real when I hit that showroom.

Just picked one up myself and I'm over the moon with it! I'd initially wanted a Sub (which i still do) but when i tried this on I was blown away with how it encompassed everything I wanted a watch to be. Sporty, and dressy, yet very simple and elegant! Bottom line this watch is as classic as Rolex gets! Great choice and i hope you fall in love with it as much as I have!

It's a perfect fit on my 6-3/4" arm.

I even like it more than my Sub.

and welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy your Explorer. I love both models (Mk1 and Mk2) and I share your enthusiasm for the Explorer 214270. IMHO they are both beautiful watches. Both models share the same 214270 reference number. There are only a few minor differences e.g., hand size (petite hands on the Mk1 do not reach the minute markers) while the Mk2 has larger hands and the numerals (3, 6 and 9) are with luminescent material - Chromalite. The Mk1 on the other hand has 18kt white gold numerals (3, 6 and 9) without any lumination. Otherwise the internals, 3132 caliber movement and a 904L stainless steel easy link 5mm bracelet are identical. Congrats on your Explorer 214270. I was fortunate to hear from the AD on Thursday and and on March 1, 2019 picked up my 214270 Explorer Mk 2. I certainly hope that you didn't have to part with a Collings or a Bourgeois. I couldn't contemplate parting with my OM2HG or my Adirondack Brazilian Soloist not even for an Explorer.
