Thanks for the tip...I'll be in London, actually Bisley, middle of next month for a couple of weeks.

I hadn't even heard about the clockmakers museum, but it's now on my list along with the British Museum and the Imperial War Museum as MUST sees.

I'll be posting up pics of me and my Air King at various spots around England when I return.

It is mostly clocks (of all shapes and sizes) and pocket watches. Since London clockmaking reached its zenith in the late 18th-19th centuries, there are scant few wristwatches on display (themselves not becoming popular until after WWI).

No Rolexes I'm afraid!

I believe that Tenzing Norgay wore a Rolex, possibly a 'Explorer' prototype, during their climb to the top of Everest, but that Edmund Hillary was either not wearing a Rolex, or had both the Smiths and a Rolex with him.

I am admittedly in over my head on this one....I'll let the PhD TRF'ers tell us who wore what...

Here are some more detailed pics of the Smiths Industries Wristwatch that Sir Edmund Hillary bequeathed to the museum:

It was hard to shoot as everything is behind glass...It is a simple and elegant timepiece....

Here is a detailed photo of the info card posted in the display....Doesn't say if he wore or had more than 1 watch or what Norgay used....

WOW. A great museum and I can not believe that the admission is free! I wish I could visit that museum!!

Does anyone know if there is any type of watch museum in the states?

Well done Paul, what a fantastic post.

I really enjoyed your Photo tour. I'm visiting London next month with my Family and I will definately try and sneak away from them for a couple of hours and visit this museum.
