Mercedes hands Vs Snow flake

Are snowflake hands on a Tudor submariner really that more desirable than Mercedes ones?

According to French navy divers in the 1960s, yes.

Rolex first used Mercedes hands on dress watches in the 1930s. They weren’t originally designed to be used underwater. Hence the Milsub sword hands.

Uh, NO!
The giant hideous square appendage on a otherwise nice looking watch is the deal breaker of the century for me.

If it wasn't for that I would probably have there intire catalog in my collection by now. Don't ask what I really think about that hour hand. I mean really. A definite wtf moment in history.

But honestly, it looks totally out of place, kills the symmetry of the dial lay out. The one thing that obviously does not belong.

Just my 2C of course. Doesn't amount to much.

Not to me. Those snowflake hands are the reason I wouldn't own a Tudor thusly equipped. While owning Omega watches, the lure to Tudor was never there. I think the snowflake hand is inelegant. That's just me. Others love the look, evidenced by Tudor still selling them.

Both are iconic brand identifiers and do their jobs well, IMHO.

I have a Tudor LHD Pelegos. Love the watch, but have never loved the snowflake hands. Kind of a weird blob to me. I understand it for underwater work, but the Rolex Mercedes hands are classic and stunning to look at.

None better in my opinion.

I love the block markers and snowflake hands. Always wanted a classic Tudor Sub and when the Pelagos 39 was announced it was everything I wanted in a modern package. I pray they don't come out with other colors or GMT lol.

I like it and hate it as much as the Mercedes hands.

It's great because it doesn't have to appeal to everyone.

Lots of variety out there.

I don't understand all the hate snowflake hands get. They look fine to me, function as intended, and instantly identify the brand.

I don't like the snowflake hands and would never own a watch with them. Same for cathedral and some other hands.

That being said I did own this Tudor for a while.

Glad to see I’m not alone in my distaste for those Tudor snowflakes. As somebody already said, it’s a deal breaker for me. Too bad because their Chrono would be nice and a good value.

I really do not like snowflake hands at all.

However I did try on a BB58 not long back and really liked it. The terrible hand sort of faded away once on the wrist.

It also works on the Pelagos since the indices are square anyways.

For everyday watch the Mercedes hands on Rolex are hands down more aesthetically appealing while remaining functional.

However as alluded to above, in terms of visibility in low light and (particularly underwater where a large spectrum of light cannot penetrate) the snowflake hands are superior. The very nature that they stick out like a sore thumb is ironically evident of that.

That being said, I don’t see why Tudor has to include them in every watch model especially their chronographs where it undermines the sub functions of the watch by obscuring the dial. Simple pencil hands or standard rectangular hands would suffice.

For me, its the same. This would have made a good poll. Of course, I feel obligated to state that I don't want anybody arrested for their taste in watch hands and they should wear whatever they like.

I love the snowflake. It would be a very boring world if all watches had the mercedes hands.
Definitely a Tudor icon.

Felt this way until I got my Opaline GMT. Dunno if the hand blends into the dial more or if I just like the color ways enough to ignore it, but when it was released it was the first Tudor I actually wanted to own. Still super happy with it, but not drawn to the other models in the range over this same concern.

Maybe they are better for function (some hundred meters underwater), but mercedes wins for aesthetics (imo)

They work on some models, they are silly on others. They look fine on the Tudor Submariner. Great watches those Tudor Subs, I've only seen one in the metal, very nice.

They look nice (snowflake hands), when two conditions are met:

1) it’s not a chronograph — snowflake hour hand covering the subdials…

2) lume markers (hour plots) are also square to match the hour hand

Just my opinion of course. It’s nice to have options at any rate!

I didn’t care for them, for years, but overtime have grown to like them. There unique and definitely identifies a Tudor watch. The Mercedes hands have become a everybody copies them, thus they are nothing special anymore.

I sort of like the snowflake hands, but it was a poor design choice on the Black Bay Chrono, which renders the subdials virtually useless when it passes over them.

Aesthetically pleasant to my eyes. They contribute to a well balanced dial in my opinion.

I couldn´t agree more! Definitely not my cup of tea. But it all boils down to personal taste, doesn´t it?
