Is it safe to wear your Rolex while you are....

..... Flying a Drone?

Apparantly so. Met up with Larry (BnLion) for a little flying this afternoon, had fun. Doing some testing on new firmware before I head to Belize tomorrow to train Law Enforcement Officers. Larry was a natural!

I have that same drone, my camera won’t calibrate and yours looks off a few degrees also.

I want one so bad. I was making due with various types of cameras 10 or so years ago. As well as my DSLR's. Now, people who aren't even into photography like me have these things and are getting amazing footage. I gotta get one!!

My favorite bird is an Intel Falcon 8+ which carries the Sony A-7, a DSLR. The gimble is amazing, the whole drone is amazing, AND expensive. Fully loaded it’s about 45 Grand. I am traveling to Amsterdam in February to do some flying with that drone.

Uhh, yeah an A7 mounted on a drone would be sweet! Any suggestions in the $400-$800 range? With emphasis on picture/video quality/smoothness. I don't really have a need for something that can fly out of sight.

Uhm.... To be honest, ... No, I really don’t know anything in that price range with a decent camera. Maybe... a DJI Mavic. I mean they have 4K cameras, GoPro mostly, which are fine for clods like me that don’t know a lot about photography, but for serious work, with a serious camera, you are looking at serious money.

Check out the DJI Mavic, Or possibly one step down, the DJI Spark.

Played around with the DJI Spark yesterday after it came in the mail. I was working in the office and my girlfriend got it all put together. I wrapped up work and, impatient as I was, I fired it up in the house. Mistake.

It worked fine for a while, beeped a few times when it got too close to some things.

Then I tried to fly it down a hallway, which is next to my Nest thermostat...it disappeared down the hall, out of view, for about 3 seconds and then...

ZZZIIIPPPPP, BAAAAMMM.

It flew directly backwards, incredibly fast directly into the wall behind it. It didn’t even move than fast when I was “flooring” the sticks in any direction. Broke one of the blades.

Lesson learned, don’t fly indoors. But based on other feedback I’ve seen online, the DJI Spark can be erratic.

What is the law about using one to peep inside homes and at underage girls out by a pool? I’m guessing it’s illegal to do so, but what can one do legally against them? My solution is probably not legal.

As a “professional” in this industry it is Yahoos doing stupid things like that with drones that really piss me off. Right now, to operate a drone for commercial use, you require an FAA license. SOON, you will require a license to operate one even for fun, which I completely support. Think about it, to operate a vehicle you require a driver’s license, to operate a commercial vehicle you also need a license, a commercial one. It should and someday will be the same with drones. But, getting back to your point, if anyone is peeking in your window with a drone as a professional, my recomendation is to bring it down by any safe method. Being a peeping Tom whether you use a drone or your own eyes is illegal, and part of the reason drones have gotten such a bad rap in this country. It over-shadows the good they do. For example, here is a video of an actual rescue by a drone in the ocean off Australia.

Take a look at the DJI spark. They're amazing little drones. They look like a toy, but get one in your hands and you can tell its a quality little drone, not some plastic China special.

The footage is stunning for something so small, and just like a camera the best drone is the drone you have on you. Their portability is amazing. The controllers are sold separately (oddly), so get one as you wont get far with the gimmicky hand gesture nonsense, or using your phone.

Tha also appear to be waterproof. A friend of mine managed to crash his into water and after drying it out it still works perfectly.

I was in Walmart earlier and remembered you recommended the Spark. So I took at look at the drones there, and they had the Spark. It is TINY!! Very cool. But, it only records up to 1080P. I think I'd at least want a 4K option. My TV is a LG C8 OLED, so I'd definitely want to have a 4K drone!

One thing to think about with drones and those small ones is wind. The Intel will hover in about a 45 MPH wind. The Phantom, up to 30, the Mavic, 15, maybe a little more, and the Spark? I honestly don’t know but if you try and fly that thing in a 35 MPH wind you’ll never see it again. I think I might have posted this before but here is me flying a demo to Michael Dell of Dell computers. We were at the Dell National sales meeting and demonstrating their new toughbook laptop. The joke was he was supposed to have pressed the wrong button and jettisoned the laptop, when in reality I ejected it on purpose. Then we were supposed to show the press and everyone how the laptop was completely undamaged. In reality, it was smashed to pieces....

The drone is the “Hercules” by a company called “Drone Volt”. It is designed to carry a tool box to the top level of a building under construction, weighs close to 30 pounds and can just about lift its body weight.
