Patek 5227 WG

Hi guys, is that time of the month again when the obsession is just too much to bear on my own, and I have to unload.

What do you guys think of the 5227 in WG ? From what I have seen is priced very high in comparison to other Patek complications. For example the 5205 in WG. What do you guys think about this piece? Yay or Nay? God bless you and thanks in advance.

I'll be very honest here Logan and say that the 5227 isn't the watch I'd personally choose if I was you. Sure, it's a very classy watch and the hinged caseback is a very nice yet subtle detail, however, for the price of a complicated timepiece I wouldn't buy that Calatrava.

The thing with this watch is that it remains a good and very versatile model, it looks classy like a Calatrava and yet has a centered second hand and a date indicator to make it look just casual enough to be worn everyday. The only problem I see here with that is that although its versatility makes it a wonderful choice it also makes you wonder why you would put that much on it when you can get other watches that would be just as nice and for either a fraction of the price or a movement that would make you feel like you have quite the watch for your money. Don't get me wrong, it's merely my opinion and I'm not bashing this watch, however, I feel like a lot of dress watches could be worn casually and I personally don't feel the need to get something too casual, I'd rather save some money by getting a 5296 or a nice 5119 as a Calatrava or a nice complicated watch. The 5205 isn't my all-time favorite Patek but I'd definitely look at it first or, perhaps, the classic 5146.

All in all, the watch sure looks great but I wouldn't go for it right away, especially given your collection and the recent addition of the 5124 to it, I much prefer your Gondolo to that one and would look at something else right now.

As always you are the man Carl. Can't complaint about your advice and the high price tag has me as you so we'll put it. I just read the article on hodinkee and picked my curiosity. Again, thank you for your time and great spot on advice as usual.

I would go for the 5205 its one of my favorite annual calendars

No reason to spend that kind of money for a calatrava

It's indeed a very cool piece, but save yourself a bunch of money and just buy a pre-owned 5296G.

This year I'd get the 5227, it is the only year that will have the engraving. After this year I would get the AC. If you like the 5227 you should get it now I think.

You'll notice the inside of the lid on the case is engraved with Patek Phillipe, according to interviews I have read it will only be that way this year. Patek intends to leave it blank in the future so folks can customize it.

Clearly it is beautiful and arguably the quintessential classy Patek watch.

Having said that, I'd go for a used 5396G over this one or possibly 5146G.

I'd go for annual calendar. More bang for your buck unless the hinged caseback is your thing.

I though this year Patek will do a personal engraving on the inside of the lid free of charge. That is what my AD told me. I am not sure if that means whether watches purchased in 2013 can have the engraving only this year or up until next year since this watch was released fairly late in the year to ADs.

The 5227G is a nice watch, but the cream colored dial is something to get used to.

Not sure, the key point is that if there is a limited amount of production then the watch is more special just due to the limited numbers produced.

Logan, i saw the 5227 in the above config for the first time on Sat and I was blown away by it. the ivory dial and dark markers and hands is an unreal looking combo

now the price, about £25,000. for another £1-2k I can get a 5205 or for the same money get a 5146. add £2-3k and i can get a brand new Mercedes E class.

some serious R&D money must have gone into that hinged caseback and IMO the watch is way overpriced for what is is, PP is, as we say in england, taking the piss on this occasion.

your 5124 is a much nicer dress watch for the money

if you want another dress watch i'd look towards the 5146, 5205 or the GOlden Ellipse family.

A beautiful watch...
Some things just speak for themselves and few words can describe such elegance.
But a shed load of money for what it is and a premium to pay.

Next week we have the Bahrain Jewellery Exhibition and PP always display.
I hope they have a 5227.

Last year went to see the 5205WG (and the price was really good) but when i handled it, the sloping sides of the high bezel just put me off but otherwise i would not say no to it.

BUT... i have been really hung up on the H-Moser, Palladium Maju with Fume Dial.
Real PP quality at a 1/2 the price. The quality is right up there with the best.

My local dealer has Patek, Moser, Rolex in one store so Im lucky.

Good luck with your choice.

..Well i just returned from the Jewellery Exhibition in Bahrain and they had a 5227 in Rose and Yellow Gold. This watch is truly class. I prefer the Rose Gold as i think the cream dial and RG go together better than YG. However, personally i am a WG fan.

The price after some discount is was in the 21K GBP range.

Logan, I fell in love with the 5227 from the moment I first saw it.... classic Patek Calatrava, but with a modern twist, and the scalloped lugs are pure artistry.... I went with the RG model as I have the 5107 in WG......

I tried it on...it's beautiful..but case seem large. For that amount I like the 5146g cream.

Very nice watches. Congratulations to those that own one. Just noticed the inside case back on the rose one pictured above doesn't have any engraving inside. Interesting. Wonder how many they made with the engraving?

let's see more snaps from more angles...

hand in pocket
facing crown
facing 9 'clock
more zoom'd out
next to other watches to get an idea of size
outside in natural light

I am quite jealous of the 5227.

But I do wish that it was a bit (1-2mm) smaller.

I like the 5227, but as others said you can get an Annual Calendar for just a bit more.
I do however think that they could have made this watch a tad smaller and equip it with a 215 manual movement to reduce some thickness.

5227 would always be a smaller market if you wanted to move it, the standard complications are always more commonly seen but talk well to the brand, I guess so does a Calatrava but as has been mentioned it is a significant step up in price that may make it more niche demand.
